Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight every day to achieve the most intense red fall color. While it can grow in partial shade, the foliage colors will be less vibrant and the silvery plumes will be much thinner.
  • Soil: This grass prefers well drained soil that stays moderately moist but is not picky about soil type. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, plant it in a slightly raised mound or add compost to improve the drainage.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your grass deeply twice a week to help the roots establish deep in the soil. Once the plant is mature, it is quite drought resistant and only needs supplemental water during long periods of extreme heat. If the plant gets too thirsty during the summer, you might notice the leaf tips turning brown or fewer flower plumes in the fall.

Pruning Tips

Think of pruning like a fresh haircut that makes room for new growth to shine. This grass should be cut back to about 4 or 6 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring. You must finish this task before you see any green shoots appearing at the base so you do not accidentally clip off the new season of growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as the plant begins to wake up. Avoid using fertilizers with high nitrogen levels in the late summer or fall. Too much nitrogen late in the season creates weak, floppy stems that are likely to fall over when the autumn winds pick
