I have been searching for this bush for many years!! I planted one back in 1986, not really knowing what I had...I placed it close to my front door because I was told that it was fragrant. When it bloomed that fragrance was magnificent ~ only problem is that I have not been able to find it anywhere. Is this particular bush fragrant????? Could this be the same plant I discovered so many years ago?? If so, I want a garden full of them!!!

Hello Geri,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story and enthusiasm about the Spice Bush! It’s truly special to hear that you discovered this plant years ago and have treasured that fragrant bloom fondly ever since.

The Spice Bush (Lindera benzoin) is indeed known for its lovely, spicy-sweet fragrance, especially noticeable in the leaves and twigs, with fragrant yellow flowers appearing in early spring. It’s very possible the bush you had was this same delightful plant! Planting them near your front door is a perfect idea to enjoy that fresh scent as you come and go.

If you’re inspired to fill your garden with more Spice Bushes, they thrive in partial shade to full sun and appreciate well-drained, moist soil—conditions typical of their native woodland habitats. Plus, they’re beautiful for attracting birds and butterflies! You might want to check out our detailed growing guide on NatureHills.com for more tips to make sure your new plantings flourish. Hello Geri,

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story and your enthusiasm for the Spice Bush! It’s wonderful to hear how much this plant has touched you over the years. The Spice Bush (Lindera benzoin) is indeed known for its lovely, pleasant fragrance, especially when it blooms in early spring. Many people find that mild, lemony scent incredibly delightful, much like the one you fondly remember from your front door all those years ago.

It sounds very possible that the Spice Bush you enjoyed back in 1986 is the same wonderful plant you’ve found with us now. If fragrant blooms and aromatic foliage are what first drew you in, then planting a handful more promises to fill your garden with those nostalgic scents you love. For best fragrance, consider planting them in spots where you often walk by, as the movement will help release their subtle aroma. They also serve as great early pollen sources for native bees, adding even more life to your garden.

For a larger Spice Bush collection, you might enjoy these tips:
- Planting spaced out about 6 to 10 feet apart will allow them room to flourish.
- Keep soil moist but well-drained, as these shrubs like consistent watering but no soggy roots.
- Mulching can help retain moisture and protect roots during winter.

If you ever have questions on nurturing these unique plants or expanding your garden further, we’re always here to support you!

Wishing you happy planting,

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to buy spicebush?

  • Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is available at native plant nurseries, specialty garden centers, and online retailers. This native shrub thrives in partial shade and moist, well-draining soil. Plant multiple specimens to ensure pollination between male and female plants for the best berry production.

When to plant spicebush?

  • Plant spicebush in early spring or fall when temperatures are cool and rainfall is adequate. This native shrub establishes easily during these seasons when soil moisture supports root development. Shop at Nature Hills for healthy spicebush plants ready for your wildlife garden.

How big does spicebush get?

  • Spicebush typically grows 4-6 feet tall and wide, forming a naturally rounded shrub. This native plant works well as a screening shrub or naturalized planting. Plant at least three specimens to ensure good pollination and fruit production for wildlife.

What USDA hardiness zones is Spice Bush suitable for?

  • Spice Bush thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4-9, making it adaptable to most temperate climates. This native shrub handles both cold winters and warm summers well. Plant in partial shade to full shade for best results.

Does Spice Bush prefer full sun, partial shade, or full shade conditions?

  • Spice Bush thrives in partial shade to full shade conditions, mimicking its natural woodland habitat. This native shrub adapts well to dappled sunlight under larger trees. Plant in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade for optimal growth, available at naturehills.com.

What type of soil does Spice Bush need to thrive?

  • Spice Bush thrives in moist, well-draining soil and tolerates a wide pH range. This adaptable native performs well in both full sun and partial shade conditions. Plant in areas that retain consistent moisture, as dry soils will stress the shrub and reduce its butterfly-attracting potential.

Is Spice Bush deer resistant?

  • Spice Bush is generally deer resistant due to its aromatic, spicy-scented foliage that deer typically avoid. The fragrant leaves and twigs contain compounds that make them unpalatable to browsing wildlife. Plant in groups of at least three for best results and natural deer deterrence.

Does Spice Bush require regular pruning or maintenance?

  • Spice Bush requires minimal maintenance once established, making it an excellent low-care native shrub. The naturally rounded growth habit rarely needs shaping. Prune lightly in late winter if needed to remove dead wood or maintain size.
