Still alive and seem to be doing

Still alive and seem to be doing well

Lilacs can be slow to settle in, so seeing yours doing well is a good sign. Scentara Pura is worth the patience once it hits its stride and that fragrance kicks in. Thanks for the update, David.

Lovely Big Bloomer

Got to enjoy blooms and wonderful lilac scent planting early spring. Exactly what I was looking for.

Early spring blooms in the first season is a great sign that it settled in well. The Pocahontas Lilac is one of those plants that really delivers on fragrance, and it sounds like yours is already living up to that. Thanks for sharing the update.

My lilac was packaged well so that it was delivered in good condition

My lilac was packaged well so that it was delivered in good condition. The shrub was nicely leafed out. I planted it right away and kept it watered. We’ve had a very warm, dry September in Michigan this year. Finally a little rain, which is much appreciated by the lilac. I look forward to its growth and blooming this coming spring.

I ordered three Pocahontas Lilac Bushes and they said arrived in great condition! They were packaged in sturdy cardboard boxes to prevent any damage to the bushes and the plants were a healthy green (which is a plus since some nurseries do not trouble with this!). I definitely recommend Nature Hills to any gardener who values quality plants. Thank You Nature Hills!!

Pocahontas Lilac

Very Pleased , shrub came well packed and very healthy , it’s actually blooming 3 lilacs for a baby shrub . Pocahontas is one of my favorite lilacs , I already have two that I got from a mom and pop garden center 25 years ago . They bloom earlier than other lilacs and bloom in abundance . I’ve been looking for another one for years , the big garden centers around me don’t carry them , I’m so thankful I found one with Nature Hills.

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing your delightful experience with your new Pocahontas Lilac! We’re thrilled to hear that it arrived healthy and is already blooming with three lilacs—that's such a wonderful sign of a happy, thriving plant. It’s heartwarming to know you have such a long-standing connection with this beloved variety; a 25-year floral friendship is truly special.

Given that the Pocahontas Lilac isn’t easy to find at local bigger garden centers, we’re grateful to be a part of that journey to keep it in your garden. To help your young shrub continue thriving, be sure to plant it in full sun with well-drained soil and plenty of space for those deliciously fragrant blooms to open up. Also, a little pruning after bloom will encourage even more prolific flowering cycles.

If you ever want more tips or have questions as it grows, we’re always here to assist on your gardening adventures. Thanks again for your wonderful feedback and for entrusting Nature Hills with your garden treasures!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature height and width of Pocahontas Lilac?

  • Pocahontas Lilac typically reaches 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide at maturity. This vigorous grower makes an excellent screening plant or informal hedge. Space plants 6-8 feet apart for hedging, or allow full spread as a specimen shrub.

Does Pocahontas Lilac grow well in my planting zone (e.g., zone 9 or hotter climates)?

  • Pocahontas Lilac thrives in zones 3-7 and struggles in zone 9 or hotter climates. Lilacs need winter chill hours to bloom properly and perform best in cooler regions. For hot climate alternatives, check Nature Hills' heat-tolerant flowering shrub selection.

What type of soil does Pocahontas Lilac prefer, and does it need alkaline soil?

  • Pocahontas Lilac thrives in well-draining, slightly alkaline soil with a pH between 6.5-7.5. Like most lilacs, it performs best when planted in fertile, loamy soil that doesn't stay waterlogged. Add lime to acidic soils before planting to achieve the ideal pH range.

Is Pocahontas Lilac deer-resistant or tolerant of pests and diseases?

  • Lilacs, including Pocahontas, are naturally deer-resistant due to their strong fragrance and leaf texture. This variety's vigorous growth habit helps it recover quickly from any minor pest damage. Plant in full sun with good air circulation to prevent common lilac issues like powdery mildew.

How hardy is Pocahontas Lilac in cold winters (zones 2-3)?

  • Pocahontas Lilac thrives in zones 3-7, making it quite cold hardy for most northern gardens. This early-blooming hybrid can handle harsh winters better than many French lilac varieties. Shop at Nature Hills for reliable cold-hardy stock.

How is Pocahontas Lilac shipped—bare root, potted, or during what seasons?

  • Pocahontas Lilac ships as a potted plant during the spring and fall planting seasons when conditions are optimal for establishment. This allows the root system to remain intact for better transplant success. Order in early spring for immediate planting after your last frost date.

What are the care requirements for Pocahontas Lilac, like pruning or fertilizing?

  • Pocahontas Lilac thrives with minimal care once established. Prune immediately after blooming ends in late spring to avoid removing next year's flower buds. Fertilize lightly in early spring with compost or balanced fertilizer, and ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew.

Is Pocahontas Lilac fragrant, and does it attract pollinators like butterflies?

  • Yes, Pocahontas Lilac produces highly fragrant deep violet blooms that attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. This early-blooming variety fills the air with the classic enchanting lilac scent when flowers open in spring. Plant where you can enjoy both the heavenly fragrance and watch pollinators visit.
