Where to Plant

Sunlight: This variety is unique because it handles more sun than most hostas, requiring 2 to 4 hours of morning sun to develop its signature golden center. Too much deep shade will leave the leaves a chartreuse green, while afternoon sun in hot climates can scorch the edges.
Soil: Aim for rich, organic soil that feels like a wrung out sponge. If you have heavy clay, mix in compost or peat moss to improve drainage, as "wet feet" during winter dormancy can lead to crown rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide 1 inch of water per week to help the root system anchor itself. Once established, Paul's Glory is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during heat waves will cause the leaf margins to turn crispy and brown. Focus your watering at the base of the plant rather than over the leaves to prevent fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Hostas do not require traditional pruning, but you should remove the flower scapes after the blooms fade in mid summer to redirect energy back into the foliage. In late fall after a hard frost has turned the leaves yellow or brown, cut the entire plant back to ground level. This cleanup is essential because it removes the hiding places where slugs and snails like to lay eggs for the following spring.

Fertilizer Needs

Plant Paul's Glory in an area that receives the right amount of light. The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration. Too much sun will burn the leaves. Paul's Glory is at home in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 with regular moisture access.

It is best to keep areas around Hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails. Low maintenance and easy care, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
