Where to Plant

Sunlight: These gardenias thrive in full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light for the best flower production. In hotter climates, provide afternoon shade to prevent the foliage from scorching and to keep the creamy white blooms from wilting prematurely.
Soil: Aim for rich, organic soil that is consistently moist but never soggy. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised mound to improve drainage; for sandy soil, mix in compost to help hold onto the nutrients they crave.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, water two to three times a week to help the roots knit into your soil. Once mature, Dwarf Radicans is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture will cause flower buds to drop before they ever open. Think of the soil like a wrung out sponge: keep it damp to the touch to ensure a heavy scent and lush green leaves.

Pruning Tips

Since these shrubs bloom on old wood, the best time to prune is immediately after the first heavy flush of flowers fades in early summer. Use sharp hand shears to shape the plant or remove spent blooms, which encourages the shrub to focus energy on new growth rather than seed production. Avoid late season pruning because cutting off the developing buds will mean you miss out on next year's fragrant display.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow release fertilizer formulated for acid loving plants once in early spring and again in mid summer. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall because they stimulate tender new growth that will likely be damaged by the first frost. Using a product designed for Azaleas or Camellias ensures the soil pH stays low enough for the plant to take up essential iron.

The Dwarf Gardenia Radicans (Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans') is a broadleaf evergreen flowering shrub with four seasons of gorgeous interest! The snowy white blossoms are ultra-fragrant and the long-blooming flowers appear in semi-double blooms from late spring to mid/late summer!

Dwarf Gardenia Radicans has a gently rounded form and dwarf nature, so is much smaller than other Gardenia varieties. Dark green, shiny leaves that are leathery in texture will fill out your Gardenia, providing an elegant contrast against the white flowers. Remaining a consistent green year-round, these are fantastic shrubs throughout USDA planting zones 7 to 9, handling high heat and humidity with ease!

Gardenia are best grown in full sun and flowers the best in at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Provide an enriched, well-drained soil location with regular moisture access during their first year in the ground. A 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the root system holds moisture more consistently in the soil, but also keeps the foliage cleaner and healthier by reducing soil and dirt splashing onto the leaves after a rain.

Prune Gardenias after their summer flowers fade to remove the browning blossoms and tidy up the shrub's shape. Provide regular fertilizer for evergreen plants to keep your Gardenia stress-free and growing to its fullest potential.
