good start

so far so good
leaves are starting to show color
But it has only been in the ground for two weeks so really just hopingthe roots establish before our first hard frost

Two weeks in the ground and already showing color is a good sign, Edward. Serviceberries are generally tough at establishment, but your instinct about root development before frost is the right thing to watch. A layer of mulch around the base can help insulate the roots and hold soil moisture as temperatures drop.

Serviceberry bush

The Serviceberry "tree" arrived with 6 stems coming from the base and measured just under 2 feet high, not the 3-4' as advertised. (In fairness to Nature Hills Nursery, they did give a $25 refund in light of the small size. However I wanted a bigger tree, not the money.)

We planted the bush just 2 weeks ago and so far it has not leafed out, so I can't yet comment on its quality or whether it lives up to its name.

Happy and healthy

Perfect size, great price, arrived happy and healthy looking. I was hesitant to buy a multi-stem serviceberry online, really wanted to pick the right shape and took a risk that definitely paid off!

Taking that leap on a multi-stem serviceberry without being able to handpick the shape yourself is a real act of faith, so it's good to hear the gamble paid off. Autumn Brilliance tends to develop a graceful natural form, and as it fills in over the next season or two you'll really see that structure come into its own. Thanks for giving it a chance, Megan, and enjoy those spring blooms. The Nature Hills Team

Arrived in good health and has established well I think! Too early to tell on overall plant but good start.

A good start with a serviceberry is exactly what you want. Autumn Brilliance tends to settle in quickly once the roots get comfortable, so if it came through shipping well and is holding steady, that's a solid sign. Keep us posted as it leafs out. The Nature Hills Team

Pleased with the tree It was growing well but

Pleased with the tree It was growing well but unfortunately I didnt add tree supports and we had a very high straight line wind come through and it bend it to the ground It has since died So sad

Serviceberries are resilient trees, but a straight-line wind can be ruthless, especially on a young tree that hasn't had time to anchor its roots. That kind of loss is genuinely disappointing after watching it get off to a good start. If you decide to try again, a simple stake and strap for the first season or two makes a real difference while the root system establishes. We hope you'll give it another shot.

I reached out to your support staff on April 17 to tell you the tree was dying.
I got a reply back saying this was your busy time of the year and my ticket for a replacement was in queue. I haven't heard anything since.

Beatiful plant full of leaves

The plant was beautiful and full of leaves. My challenge is that the deer ate the top part of the tree right away. I hope it will come back out.

Beautiful and healthy tree was delivered promptly and packaged very carefully! Thank you for all

Beautiful and healthy tree was delivered promptly and packaged very carefully! Thank you for all of the care given.

Autumn Brilliance is such a rewarding tree to grow, and it sounds like yours arrived in great shape and ready to establish. Give it consistent water through the first season and you will be well on your way to those brilliant fall colors it is named for. Thanks for taking a moment to share your experience, Linda.

Can't help but to think of the group Devo and their song "Whip it"!

I received what was described to me as a "whip" version of the tree; no branches with the top cut off - I don't care for it because there'sa long time that it will take for the branches to form to allow it to be properly pruned and shaped. I would prefer to start off with a smaller natural shaped tree and let it grow into maturity.

Packaging protected the trees during shipment

Packaging protected the trees during shipment. I just got them planted, so we'll see how they do!

Glad the packaging did its job and they arrived in good shape, Todd. Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is a tough, adaptable tree, so with good planting it tends to settle in well. Come back and let us know how they leaf out in spring!

Arrived in great condition

My Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (multi-trunk, 5 gallon pot) arrived in good condition. It definitely needed watering, but that's to be expected. The soil was secured in the pot with a tightly wrapped plastic bag, and everything stayed intact during shipment. The branches and foliage look very nice, and the berries are already starting to develop (mid May). Shipping took around a month, which isn't bad considering I didn't order until the middle of April. Overall great experience!

Hello sjacobs2,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful feedback! We're delighted to hear your Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry arrived in great shape and that the tightly wrapped soil kept everything intact during shipment. It’s also exciting that the berries are already forming—such a lovely preview of the vibrant seasons to come.

You’re absolutely right about the watering; fresh arrival plants often need a good drink after journeying to make sure they settle in well. As your tree grows, continuing to water regularly, especially in its first summer, will help establish strong roots. If you ever want tips on caring for multi-trunk serviceberries or ideas to complement your Autumn Brilliance with other shrubs or perennials, we’re always here to assist!

Thanks again for sharing your experience and for choosing Nature Hills—we look forward to seeing your amazing garden develop!

Dear Sjacobs2,

It’s wonderful that the packaging kept everything intact during transit — we always aim to ensure our plants travel safely, even if a bit of post-shipment watering is needed.

Exceeded Expectations

I am so happy with the bare root Autumn Brilliance serviceberry I just received. It is taller than I expected, more fully branched and has lots of healthy roots. There is some green showing on some of the buds. It spent an extra day in transit because it arrived at the final FedEx location on Saturday and had to spend a Sunday there. That was a little worrisome because we are having record heat for the first week of April - nearly 90 degrees today! Some of the root packing material was dry but the majority still had moisture. Thank you to the growers, packers and shippers. Thank you Nature Hills for the opportunity of adding such a lovely plant to my yard.

Hi Angele,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Autumn Brilliance serviceberry! We’re thrilled to hear it arrived looking healthier and fuller than you anticipated—that’s always such a joy to hear. You’re right to keep a close eye on those buds and root packing during the heatwave; swings like that can be challenging for newly shipped plants. Since you noticed some dryness in the packing material, we recommend giving the root area a gentle soaking as you establish the plant in your yard, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist but well-drained. This will help your new serviceberry settle in comfortably despite the unusually warm April weather.

Your kudos to our growers, packers, and shippers mean a lot, and we’ll happily share your thanks with the whole team! If you have any questions about care as your serviceberry matures or grow more plants in the future, we’re always here to assist.

Warm blessings for your beautiful garden,
Rooting for your garden’s success,
Your Nature Hills Plant Care Team

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature height and width of Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry typically reaches 15-25 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity. This multi-stemmed tree has a naturally rounded, upright form that works well in smaller landscapes. Plan for adequate spacing since it can spread as wide as it is tall.

Does Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry grow as a tree or multi-stem shrub?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry naturally grows as a multi-stem shrub but can be pruned into a single-trunk tree form. This versatile native reaches 15-25 feet tall with an equal spread. Train it early for your preferred shape, available at naturehills.com.

What are the light requirements for Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry—full sun or partial shade?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. This adaptable native tree performs best with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and fruit production. Plant in a location with morning sun and some afternoon protection in hot climates.

What type of soil does Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry prefer, and is it tolerant of clay or poor drainage?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry adapts to most soil types including clay and tolerates poor drainage better than many fruit trees. This native hybrid thrives in average garden conditions without requiring special soil amendments. Plant in well-draining soil when possible, but don't worry if your clay soil stays moist longer than ideal.

How often should I water Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry, especially during drought or heat?

  • Water deeply once weekly during establishment, then this drought-tolerant native needs minimal supplemental watering. During extended heat or drought, provide deep soaking every 10-14 days rather than frequent shallow watering. Shop at Nature Hills for this resilient serviceberry that thrives with minimal care once established.

When and how should I prune Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry to maintain its shape?

  • Prune Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry in late winter while dormant, before spring flowering begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain its naturally attractive elliptical shape. Light pruning works best since this tree has good natural form.

Is Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry deer resistant, or will it attract wildlife like birds?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry attracts birds who will quickly strip the berry harvest in early summer. While not specifically deer resistant, the tree's main wildlife appeal is to beneficial insects during spring flowering and songbirds during fruiting season. Plant expecting to share the harvest with birds, or cover branches if you want the berries for yourself.
