Serviceberry bush

The Serviceberry "tree" arrived with 6 stems coming from the base and measured just under 2 feet high, not the 3-4' as advertised. (In fairness to Nature Hills Nursery, they did give a $25 refund in light of the small size. However I wanted a bigger tree, not the money.)

We planted the bush just 2 weeks ago and so far it has not leafed out, so I can't yet comment on its quality or whether it lives up to its name.

I reached out to your support staff on April 17 to tell you the tree was dying.
I got a reply back saying this was your busy time of the year and my ticket for a replacement was in queue. I haven't heard anything since.

Beatiful plant full of leaves

The plant was beautiful and full of leaves. My challenge is that the deer ate the top part of the tree right away. I hope it will come back out.

Beautiful and healthy tree was delivered promptly and packaged very carefully! Thank you for all

Beautiful and healthy tree was delivered promptly and packaged very carefully! Thank you for all of the care given.

Autumn Brilliance is such a rewarding tree to grow, and it sounds like yours arrived in great shape and ready to establish. Give it consistent water through the first season and you will be well on your way to those brilliant fall colors it is named for. Thanks for taking a moment to share your experience, Linda.

Can't help but to think of the group Devo and their song "Whip it"!

I received what was described to me as a "whip" version of the tree; no branches with the top cut off - I don't care for it because there'sa long time that it will take for the branches to form to allow it to be properly pruned and shaped. I would prefer to start off with a smaller natural shaped tree and let it grow into maturity.

Packaging protected the trees during shipment

Packaging protected the trees during shipment. I just got them planted, so we'll see how they do!

Glad the packaging did its job and they arrived in good shape, Todd. Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is a tough, adaptable tree, so with good planting it tends to settle in well. Come back and let us know how they leaf out in spring!

FINALLY

Bought my house 3 years ago & had these shrubs with amazing fall color. Kept asking, no one could tell me what they are. Found you guys by accident but they look exactly like the pictures & description. Cole's Select really does offer something all year.

shade lover

I've had a tough time finding anything to survive in the back of my yard under a few old shade trees. Bought the cole's serviceberry & now I'm back for more. It survived the brutal winter we had, had beautiful flowers thi sspring & beat the heat we had this summer. It's a winner in my yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature height and width of Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry typically reaches 15-25 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity. This multi-stemmed tree has a naturally rounded, upright form that works well in smaller landscapes. Plan for adequate spacing since it can spread as wide as it is tall.

Does Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry grow as a tree or multi-stem shrub?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry naturally grows as a multi-stem shrub but can be pruned into a single-trunk tree form. This versatile native reaches 15-25 feet tall with an equal spread. Train it early for your preferred shape, available at naturehills.com.

What are the light requirements for Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry—full sun or partial shade?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. This adaptable native tree performs best with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and fruit production. Plant in a location with morning sun and some afternoon protection in hot climates.

What type of soil does Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry prefer, and is it tolerant of clay or poor drainage?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry adapts to most soil types including clay and tolerates poor drainage better than many fruit trees. This native hybrid thrives in average garden conditions without requiring special soil amendments. Plant in well-draining soil when possible, but don't worry if your clay soil stays moist longer than ideal.

How often should I water Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry, especially during drought or heat?

  • Water deeply once weekly during establishment, then this drought-tolerant native needs minimal supplemental watering. During extended heat or drought, provide deep soaking every 10-14 days rather than frequent shallow watering. Shop at Nature Hills for this resilient serviceberry that thrives with minimal care once established.

When and how should I prune Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry to maintain its shape?

  • Prune Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry in late winter while dormant, before spring flowering begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain its naturally attractive elliptical shape. Light pruning works best since this tree has good natural form.

Is Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry deer resistant, or will it attract wildlife like birds?

  • Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry attracts birds who will quickly strip the berry harvest in early summer. While not specifically deer resistant, the tree's main wildlife appeal is to beneficial insects during spring flowering and songbirds during fruiting season. Plant expecting to share the harvest with birds, or cover branches if you want the berries for yourself.
