Where to Plant

Sunlight: Yoshino Cryptomeria thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its signature dense, conical shape. While it can tolerate partial shade, too much shade will cause the foliage to become thin and "leggy" rather than lush and full.
Soil: These evergreens prefer moist, acidic, and well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, mix in compost or aged pine bark to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years of establishment, provide 1 to 2 inches of water per week to help the deep root system take hold. Once mature, this cedar is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during hot summers can lead to browning of the inner needles. Aim for deep, infrequent soakings at the base of the tree rather than light sprinkles to encourage roots to grow deep into the earth.

Pruning Tips

This variety naturally grows into a symmetrical spire, so it rarely needs pruning other than to remove dead or broken branches. Because it blooms on old wood, any structural shaping should be done in late winter before new growth begins. Think of pruning as a light grooming rather than a haircut, as heavy shearing can ruin the graceful, feathery texture of the foliage.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release evergreen fertilizer in early spring just as the tips show new green growth. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is easily damaged by cold winter winds, leading to "winter burn" on the branch tips.

This strong grower provides a tall, dense, evergreen screen along the edges of many famous gardens. A lot of the charm of this graceful evergreen is its great texture and color. The summer color is glistening blue-green, but the needle-like leaves turn a bronzy-purple winter hue, especially when exposed to cold winds!

The tree grows into a coveted tall open pyramidal shape, but has an almost "fluffy" look to it that has to be seen to be appreciated. These Japanese Cedar trees grow fast throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9 and can be very adaptable and pest-resistant.

Cryptomeria will grow well in either sun or shade and tolerate many different soil types! In colder growing zones, protect these evergreens from harsh winds, on well-drained, moist, acid soil. Rarely in need of fussing or pruning and just wants a little springtime fertilizer. Leave the branches all the way to the ground to keep the classic form and the maximum amount of privacy and screening! The only pruning to be done should be to remove winter dieback.
