Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Need a graceful front yard landscaping plant? The First Editions® Vintage Jade Distylium (Distylium 'Vintage Jade') is a nifty alternative to common (dare we say 'overused'?) species like Cherry Laurels, Junipers, Hollies, Indian Hawthorn and even Boxwood!
Vintage Jade is a broadleaf evergreen shrub, with a beautiful dark blue-green color year round! In the winter, small maroon-colored flowers bloom on the arching stems, bringing winter color when not much else is blooming. Your pollinators will be sure to show their gratitude!
This is a good thing! Because these are such low-maintenance, versatile, and graceful plants, you won't want your garden to be without one! Adaptable throughout USDA planting zones 7 to 9, Winter Hazel shrugs off heat and humidity with ease!
Planting and Application:
Tired of the "same old, same old" in your garden? Ready for something new? Try Distylium, a member of the Witch Hazel family, that is native to China. Forward-thinking landscapers are starting to use them in landscapes across the country! So easy to grow and add year-round beauty to your landscape, you'll wonder why you've not included these shrubs in your garden design already!
Vintage Jade is low growing and stays in neat, graceful mounds adding a touch of 'formal wildness' to your hedges. Use as screening, backdrops, and low foundation hedges that won't block your view! There's no spraying or shearing needed to keep them looking their best either! Even large planters become feature plantings as well!
- Winter Hazel/Witch Hazel Family Broadleaf Evergreen Shrub
- Super Easy Care & No-Fade Foliage
- Graceful Mounding Shape
- Maroon Flowers in Winter For Pollinators
- Hedges, Low Barrier Plantings, Specimens & Container Accents
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This evergreen shrub is super easy-care, and Distylium is pest and disease-resistant, drought-tolerant, and thrives in full to partial sun, in wet soil or dry conditions once established! How wonderful is that? Simply top-dress the soil with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch each year and then prune these shrubs after they flower to tidy them up and that's it! You can even skip shearing and just perform a renewal pruning every 3-5 years instead.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Once Established Handles Wet to Dry Sites
- Any Well-Drained Soil Type
- Prune After Flowering If Needed
- Easy-Care & Colorful First Editions® Shrub
Catch the wave before the rest of the country does! This is bound to be a favorite plant of landscapers and home gardeners soon. Don't wait and order yours now before Nature Hills sells out of our limited supply.
