Colorful Coral Bells at Nature Hills Nursery!

Ruffled colorful foliage and airy dainty blooms, the beloved perennial Coral Bells (Heuchera) are often known as Alumroot or Rock Geranium!

Coral Bells LeavesThese tender perennials are native to North America and are a genus of the herbaceous family Saxifragaceae. The Heuchera plant is named after a German physician named Johann Heinrich von Heucher. There are about 37 species of Coral Bells that grow in a wide variety of habitats, are incredibly cold-hardy, and even heat and humidity tolerant! Adapting to the varying demands of different environments, temperatures, soil, and other factors!

With as wide a range of colors and forms, each Coral Bells species can look quite different from one another!

You will see Coral Bells sporting clouds of light, airy flower spikes on tall wiry stems. These flowers appear in late spring or early summer. Attracting early emerging bees and butterflies, and even a few Hummingbirds, you'll love them for adding filler to bouquets and floral arrangements!

However, the foliage is primarily the main focus of Coral Bells! The striking foliage can be red, silver, purple, as well as every shade of green! Even changing their leafy wardrobe throughout the growing season as the new leaves, mature foliage, and fall color can be completely different too!

Using Coral Bells in Your Landscape

Coral Bells

Must-haves for the understory and Cottage garden, Coral Bells add color to the front of the garden and in mixed container gardens! Use the incredible foliage as edging and facer plants, fringe around trees and larger shrubs, as well as pollinator-friendly garden filler!

No matter the color theme or how formal your garden is, there is a Coral Bells for you!

For a great combination of colors, mix Coral Bells with other shade-lovers like Hosta as well as Ferns, Bleeding Hearts, and Astilbe, and also as a mixer with low groundcovers such as Lamium.

Caring for Coral Bells

Coral Bells are of course incredible in mixed Perennial gardens to add a pop of color, but to really maximize their dramatic foliage, plant en masse displays of the same Coral Bells variety to create drifts of vibrant color!

Plant massed on hillsides and slopes to slow erosion, transforming a boring barren hillside into a gleaming spectacle all growing season!

Create a Coral Bells collection by mixing chartreuse greens like Lemon Supreme, with wine-hued foliage like Forever® Red, the silver cast of Spellbound mixes wonderfully with Blackout! Green Spice Coral Bells enhances Peppermint Spice, while Cherry Cola adds fizz to Delta Dawn!

Caring For Coral Bells

Coral Bells are tender perennials that should be planted in spring or fall. They prefer full sun in cool climates, light shade everywhere, or even full shade in hot summer growing zones.

They'll live for many years as long as they are planted in well-drained soil.

These perennials will die back to the ground in cold climates but burst to life in the spring anew. In warmer growing zones with mild winters, Coral Bells can remain semi-to-fully evergreen!

Low-maintenance, all these ornamentals need to keep them looking their best is for you to remove the dead foliage in early spring, along with adding a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and insulate the crowns.

After the blooms fade, the flower stalks should be deadheaded, and it's a good idea to divide your clumps every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
