Freesia Bulbs

Native to South Africa, Freesia is a genus of 16 species with many hybrids and cultivars

Yellow Freesia

of flowering, herbaceous perennial corms. Each bulb sprouts a fountain of spikey green, slender leaves that look great all growing season long!

Technically, Freesia grows from bulb-like structures called corms (swollen underground portions of the stem). The corms are round and squat, from which the roots and leaves emerge.

The tubular 6-petaled flowers have a spicy, peppery sweet fragrance, perfect for floral design and bouquets! With long flowering spires lined with trumpet-shaped flowers that stand atop elegant tapering stems, Freesia are beloved for their sweet scent and wonderfully petite size!

How To Use Freesia In Your Garden

Easy to grow perennials, these are favorites in bouquets, and containers, and are great Pollinator plants! Tuck a few of these space-saving perennial bulbs in your mixed Perennial borders and Cottage gardens!

They are an elegant and delightful addition to flower arrangements that will last for several weeks! The stalks are free of foliage, allowing the blooms to add a clean and elegant look to bouquets.

Red Freesia

The vibrant blooms are incredibly powerful and illuminating, making this flower hard to miss. You can make quite a dramatic impact on your landscaping by planting groupings, rows, or mass plantings of low-maintenance Freesia in your garden.

Freesia need lots of warmth and humidity, so planting them along your foundation, or in a sunny mailbox garden will be the perfect spot to keep them happy! They'll act as fringy edging along your paths and walkways, or perfume the front of the garden border as a fragrant finishing touch!

Add bold color to planters and porch pots in the sun! These smaller accent plants rarely grow taller or wider than 2 feet, making them ideal container specimens, and patio containers, while also adding color and perfume to seating area planters, hanging baskets, and window boxes.

Caring For Freesia

Get your new Freesia off on the right foot with these simple tips, planting advice in our #ProPlantTips, and with Nature Hills Root Booster!

  • Freesia need full sun but tolerate partial shade/afternoon shade in hot climates
  • These perennial corms need well-drained soil. Create raised gardens or berms if you have poor drainage
  • Water new plants regularly using the Finger Test to help them get established
  • Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the root system
  • Deadhead after flowers fade but keep the leaves so they can make food for the bulb, then trim the leaves down when they turn yellow.

Freesia FAQs

Choosing The Right Freesia For You!

Browse only for the Freesia corms and container plants for your Planting Zone using our USDA zone filters, then narrow the options by flower color, size, and form!

How Do You Plant Freesia Corms?

Plant Freesia corms in the spring about 2 inches deep with the pointed end up, spaced about 6 inches apart. The corms multiply and will naturalize in USDA growing zones 9 and 10.

Can Cold Climates Grow Freesia?

Freesia can be planted outdoors in the fall or spring in zones 9 and 10 and left in the ground year-round as perennial bulbs.

All growing zones, however, can grow Freesia as:

  • Annual accents and seasonal container specimens
  • Forced in the winter for indoor color and fragrance
  • Started indoors in the spring and transplanted outside once temperatures are warmer
  • Treated as you would Canna and Dahlia, and lift your plants in the fall before a hard frost
  • Northern gardeners in USDA planting zones 1-8 can bring Freesia in for the winter as houseplants

What Does Freesia Smell Like?

These dainty blooms pack a punch with nose-tickling peppery, super sweet with some varieties carrying a bit of citrus, and spicy notes too!
