The Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima') is a deciduous edible native shrub that typically grows to 10 feet tall and is perhaps most noted for its attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color! These Superfruit boast incredible health benefits for you and your family!

Clusters of white to pinkish flowers appear in spring. Flowers are followed by abundant glossy small, red fruit which appears in dense clusters along the branches. The glossy, dark green toothy foliage turns bright eye-catching red in autumn for a fiery end of the growing season. The fruit ripens in late summer and persists throughout fall and well into winter.

Brilliantissima primarily differs from its cousins by being more compact, producing more lustrous foliage with superior red fall color and producing larger, glossier, and more abundant fruit! What's not to love? Your local songbirds and pollinators sure know it's incredible and will be showing up in droves!

Planting and Application:

Beautiful in a naturalized area, and stunning as a hedge, Red Chokeberry are versatile and easy-going edible landscaping wildlife shrubs! Plant a hedgerow to corral your kitchen or vegetable garden. The charming berries are large and lustrous. Add these delicious superfruits to your home gardens for a healthy addition to jams, jellies, preserves and pies.

Aronia hedges offer multi-season interest as well as block drifting snow, are fantastic privacy screens, shelterbelts for wildlife and large windbreaks. These plants grow into an excellent informal, untrimmed hedge. To create a solid screen, plant them 3 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of the first plant to the center of the next. You'll define the space in a beautiful and easy-care way.

The best fruit production usually occurs in full sun, however, these adaptable native species are just as happy in partial shade as well! It has a wide range of soil tolerance, including boggy soils. Aronia bloom on old wood from last year, so only prune when dormant before you see new growth.

Robins love this plant

We moved into this home a year ago not knowing what was planted. I just discovered that what I have at the corner is Red Chokeberry! I, too, read that birds dont like this plant, but a couple of days ago I saw at least 40 robins...and a few other birds feasting on my plant! Meanwhile, there were at least 15 other robins waiting their turn in another tree!
