Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the absolute best fruit set and stunning crimson fall foliage, plant your Red Chokeberry where it gets a full six hours or more of direct, unfiltered sun. While it accepts partial shade, be aware that you will trade some sun exposure for fall color, which will be a duller burgundy, and berry production will be significantly lighter.
  • Soil: This plant is wonderfully forgiving and handles a wide range of soil types, from heavy clay to quick-draining sand. It naturally prefers a rich, moist loam, but is highly adaptable. If your soil is very poor or compacted, simply work in some finished compost to improve drainage in clay or to increase water retention in sandy spots.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, your priority is root establishment, so keep the soil consistently moist with a thorough soaking once a week. Once established (after its second year), Red Chokeberry is quite drought-tolerant, but it will still appreciate supplemental water during extended hot, dry spells. Inconsistent watering will certainly stress the plant, often resulting in smaller, shriveled berries and a less vibrant autumn foliage display.

Pruning Tips

Red Chokeberry blooms on old wood, meaning the flower buds that produce the following spring's berries are set the previous year. The best time for pruning is in late winter or very early spring before new buds swell, focusing on renewal pruning. Cut back one-third of the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground; this technique keeps the shrub vigorous, promotes the fresh, new growth that yields the best blooms, and prevents the shrub from becoming too dense.

Fertilizer Needs

If your soil is average, this tough native shrub likely won’t need supplemental feeding. If you choose to boost its vigor, apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, just as new growth emerges in early spring. What to avoid is applying high-nitrogen fertilizer past mid-summer; this excess nitrogen forces out soft, late-season shoots that will not have time to mature, leaving them highly vulnerable to winter freezing damage.

The Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima') is a deciduous edible native shrub that typically grows to 10 feet tall and is perhaps most noted for its attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color! These Superfruit boast incredible health benefits for you and your family!

Clusters of white to pinkish flowers appear in spring. Flowers are followed by abundant glossy small, red fruit which appears in dense clusters along the branches. The glossy, dark green toothy foliage turns bright eye-catching red in autumn for a fiery end of the growing season. The fruit ripens in late summer and persists throughout fall and well into winter.

Brilliantissima primarily differs from its cousins by being more compact, producing more lustrous foliage with superior red fall color and producing larger, glossier, and more abundant fruit! What's not to love? Your local songbirds and pollinators sure know it's incredible and will be showing up in droves!

Planting and Application:

Beautiful in a naturalized area, and stunning as a hedge, Red Chokeberry are versatile and easy-going edible landscaping wildlife shrubs! Plant a hedgerow to corral your kitchen or vegetable garden. The charming berries are large and lustrous. Add these delicious superfruits to your home gardens for a healthy addition to jams, jellies, preserves and pies.

Aronia hedges offer multi-season interest as well as block drifting snow, are fantastic privacy screens, shelterbelts for wildlife and large windbreaks. These plants grow into an excellent informal, untrimmed hedge. To create a solid screen, plant them 3 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of the first plant to the center of the next. You'll define the space in a beautiful and easy-care way.

  • White Flowers in Spring
  • Profusion of Red Fruit Attracts Birds
  • Red Foliage in Autumn
  • Edible Antioxidant-Rich Superfruit
  • Large Screens, Hedges, Shelterbelts, Windbreaks & Naturalized Plantings

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The best fruit production usually occurs in full sun, however, these adaptable native species are just as happy in partial shade as well! It has a wide range of soil tolerance, including boggy soils. Aronia bloom on old wood from last year, so only prune when dormant before you see new growth.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Tolerates Periodically Wet or Dry Soils
  • Cold-Hardy & Heat Tolerant
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Appreciates Mulch
