Buddleia needs at least six hours of daylight for best flowering. They also require well-drained soil that doesn't stay soggy for long. When your plants are young, or if you'll keep them in containers, supply them with a regular schedule of supplemental water. Once their root systems are established in your landscape, they'll become waterwise. Provide a mulched bed and supplemental moisture for the best display.

Trim these plants back in early spring. In Zone 5 and cold winters, cut them to the ground because these shrubs act like herbaceous Perennials. Each year, the lavish white blooms and cool-toned foliage emerge from the roots. In all other Zones, these shrubs remain woody and can be trimmed or cut back to 12 inches tall.
