Where to Plant

Sunlight: Plant in full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can survive in partial shade, you will see fewer flower spikes and the growth will become leggy rather than compact.
Soil: This shrub needs sharp drainage and does not like "wet feet" or heavy, soggy ground. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound to ensure water moves away from the root zone quickly.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, this Butterfly Bush is quite drought tolerant, though consistent moisture during heat waves prevents the foliage from wilting. Avoid erratic watering, as extreme dry spells followed by flooding can cause the plant to drop its lower leaves prematurely.

Pruning Tips

Since Purple Haze blooms on new wood, you should prune it back hard in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Cut the stems down to about 12 inches from the ground to encourage a flush of fresh, vigorous stems that will carry the seasons flowers. Think of this like a "reset button" that keeps the plant from getting woody and maintains its tidy, mounded shape.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring to fuel the upcoming growth spurt. The Lo & Behold® Purple Haze is low-spreading, but its branches reach horizontally outward and become full of airy branches hanging heavy with their nectar-rich blooms.

And these violet blooms are to die for! This plant gets bejeweled in fragrant purple blooms in summer and they last through fall. This Buddleia's rich green aromatic leaves will give your garden a verdant feel all growing season! Growing throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9, growing just 2-3 feet in height and spreads wide to 4-5 feet across.

While Buddleia are low-water usage but do appreciate supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning until frost. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system. Like most butterfly favorites, this deciduous plant is drought tolerant and not on any deer's menu of favorite snacks.

You won't have to deadhead this low-maintenance beauty, either. In cold climates, you will want to cut these plants back to the ground before spring because these plants act more like herbaceous perennials.
