Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This tough evergreen is incredibly versatile, thriving in everything from full sun (6+ hours) to full shade. While it handles deep shade well, you will see denser foliage and superior winter color with a few hours of sun.
  • Soil: It adapts to most soil types but absolutely requires good drainage to prevent root rot. If you have heavy clay, amend the planting site with compost or plant slightly above grade to ensure water moves away from the roots.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply once a week during the first year to help the extensive root system establish, checking more frequently during heatwaves. Once established, Celtic Pride® is quite drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture helps maintain lush, vibrant green foliage and prevents browning tips during extreme heat.

Pruning Tips

Pruning is rarely needed due to its naturally neat, low-mounding habit, but if shaping is desired, do it in early spring before new growth emerges. You can also lightly trim back any wayward branches in late spring to maintain a tidy appearance, much like a quick trim to even out a haircut.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, balanced evergreen fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to push. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer, as late feeding can encourage tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter freezes arrive.

Feathery Celtic Pride® Siberian Cypress (Microbiota decussata 'Prides') offers low-lying, soft drifts of fine textured foliage. Leverage these durable, spreading evergreens to put the finishing touches in your planting designs.

These cold-hardy creepers tolerate sun or partial shade. Use them throughout your front and backyards to tie the look together.

Once they are installed and their root systems are established...these versatile low shrubs become bulletproof. They show excellent disease resistance, and can even tolerate a brief drought after the first few seasons.

Charming Celtic Pride® Siberian Cypress develops flat, densely held sprays of mid-toned green. The color deepens with a pretty purple overcast during the cold season.

Cover ground with its airy, graceful branches. Lush Celtic Pride® Siberian Cypress is soft to the touch; and delivers year-round texture and color.

This special plant was brought out of Soviet Russia for the landscape trade. Use it to tell a brave story of freedom in your landscape.

Place your order for this reliable evergreen groundcover You'll love the high performance of our expertly grown Celtic Pride® Siberian Cypress!

How to Use Celtic Pride® Siberian Cypress in the Landscape

Plant a row of Celtic Pride near the edge of paved paths for an excellent edging plant. Space them five feet apart and allow 30 inches away from the path, so their furthest spray will softly cross over the boundary.

Give them room to develop from their crown into the mature spread listed on the Plant Highlights. Preplanning for the visual effect you want will reduce most—if not all—pruning tasks.

Add them as an underplanting to taller evergreen shrubs or trees. Or create a blissfully easy-care lawn planting underneath an ornamental Redbud or Flowering Dogwood tree from our extensive online collection.

This choice keeps everyone with an opinion happy. Kids can't resist running their hands along the downturned tips of the fluffy foliage!

Celtic Pride is a great choice to include near your outdoor entertainment area. Keep them in long planter boxes, or add to patio beds with Beverly™ Eleganza® Hybrid Tea Rose and Spartan Juniper Spiral Topiary as a formal accent.

Dress them up or down. This choice looks great in foundation plantings and in mixed borders.

But there is something almost magical about a mass planting of Celtic Price Siberian Cypress running down the length of a slope. This larger-than-life application gives everyone a chance to study the small, organic hills and valleys and the way the sprays lift and dip in the wind.

Add them to a mixed planting on a steep hill for a fantastic garden feature. Run a collection of Sumac with landscape Juniper shrubs and finish with several staggered rows of Celtic Pride closer to ground level.

You'll turn a liability into a landscape asset!

#ProPlantTips for Care

This cold-hardy plant prefers well-drained soil. Give it at least four hours of direct sunlight a day for top-notch color.

Apply a moderate amount of water on a consistent basis. Use mulch to keep the roots cool, but pull it back away from touching the trunk.

Weed newly installed mass plantings as the canopies grow together and touch. You may want to shape with light trimming in spring, but shouldn't need to do much beyond that.

Fertilize with an evergreen formula according to the directions. The best support you can give your new plants is to use Nature Hills Root Booster during planting for life-long benefits that never wear out.

In deer country, all newly installed plant material should get an application of Deer Repellent. Protect your landscaping investment by reapplying as directed by the label.

Make the most of your Great Outdoors with these very special plants that bring the big picture home. Enjoy your freedom from toil and stress with the showy good looks of this Proven Winner.
