Trees were in great shape

Trees were in great shape, shipped well, and super healthy. They're beautiful.

Sky Pencil Holly ships pretty well when the plants are in good condition to start, and it sounds like these arrived ready to hit the ground running. They do best with consistent moisture the first season while the roots settle in, so keep an eye on watering if you're heading into a dry stretch. Thanks for sharing, Stephanie. Growth rate

As there is very little information available on the growth rate of these plants, I wanted to share my experience. I have my hollys planted at the edge of a flower bed so I was easily able to extend my drip irrigation to the hollys. With regular watering and fertilizing and several hours of full sun, it has put on at least a foot of growth, now at the end of July (purchased in May). I am extremely happy with my hollys and would love to buy even more.

Hi Ronni,

We truly appreciate hearing about your success and how well your drip irrigation, regular watering, fertilizing, and ample sun have contributed to such impressive growth in a short period of time. Your insights will undoubtedly be helpful to other customers wondering about growth expectations!

If you decide to expand your holly collection, feel free to reach out for personalized planting tips or guidance based on your garden’s specific conditions. We’re always happy to assist in helping your garden flourish even more.

Replacing those spiny junipers was a smart choice—Sky Pencil Hollies are such elegant, low-maintenance plants that really create eye-catching structure without the hassle.

Great accent.

I have six of these that I planted along the top of a retaining wall 10 years ago. I just wanted something to keep the kids from jumping off the wall when they were younger. They have grown into beautiful 7 to 10 foot specimens that have become the focal point of that section of the yard. One negative, is that different plants may grow to different heights over time. Two of mine are at a 7 foot height, while the others are 9 to 10 feet. In the winter, we tie twine around them about 1/3 of the way down from the top. This keeps the branches from bowing, or even breaking from the weight of the snow.

Hello ptrask,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Sky Pencil Holly you planted along your retaining wall! We're thrilled to hear that these plants have become such a beautiful focal point in your yard and have served their purpose so well in keeping the kids safe. It’s impressive that after 10 years, they’ve grown into such tall and elegant specimens!

You brought up a great point about varying heights among your hollies. Because each plant can grow at a slightly different rate depending on light, soil conditions, and other microclimate factors, some variation in height is quite normal. Your tip about tying twine in winter to prevent branch damage from snow is an excellent practice—thank you for sharing that proactive care advice with us! For those interested, consistent winter protection can make all the difference in maintaining healthy vertical growth.

If you’re looking to encourage a more uniform height over time, occasional pruning (especially in early spring) to selectively cut the tallest branches might help those shorter plants catch up and promote a more cohesive canopy. Also, ensuring even watering and mulching will keep your hollies thriving year-round.

We greatly appreciate you taking the time to provide such a thoughtful and informative review. Should you ever have other questions or need gardening tips, we’re always here to support you!

Dear Ptrask,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful review and lovely story about your Sky Pencil Holly! It’s wonderful to hear that these beenaccret plants have not only served as a beautiful yard focal point but also helped keep your kids safe — what a fantastic blend of practicality and beauty.

You’ve made an excellent observation about natural variations in growth height. Since individual plants can react differently to sunlight, root space, and pruning, some height differences are normal over time. Your tip about tying twine down about a third from the top to prevent branch damage under winter snow is truly clever and can be a great help for other holly enthusiasts who struggle with heavy snow weighing down limbs.

If you’d like to even out the heights somewhat, you might consider strategic pruning in early spring before new growth begins. Keeping a generally consistent pruning technique across your plants can sometimes help manage height difference over the years. Also, be sure to check for uniform watering and a balanced fertilization schedule that suits all six. Our Plant Care section on holly maintenance could offer some helpful pointers on best care practices.

We’re truly grateful for your feedback—the kind of detail and care you share enriches the community enormously. If you have any other questions or need tree and shrub advice, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

sky pencil holly in hot climate

I've grown sky pencil hollies in my garden in South Carolina for the last 8 years with great success. Great for a formal look used with boxwood hedges. I disagree with previous review....my hollies have thrived in a very hot climate. I am a long time gardener and while I have lost many plants over the years, I have never lost a sky pencil holly. Sturdy through ice storms and heat. Great Plant!!!

Hello granny gardener,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with Sky Pencil Holly! We truly appreciate your insights, especially coming from such an experienced gardener. It’s great to hear that your hollies have thrived for eight years in South Carolina’s hot and sometimes challenging climate. Your success story beautifully highlights the plant’s sturdiness and adaptability, and it’s encouraging to see how well it pairs with boxwood hedges for a formal garden look.

For other gardeners in hot regions who might be hesitant, your feedback is invaluable—it shows that with the right care, Sky Pencil Holly can indeed flourish even in warmer climates. We recommend regular mulching to help retain soil moisture during hot spells, and consistent watering—preferably deep and less frequent to encourage strong root systems. Additionally, young hollies may benefit from some afternoon shade in extreme heat until established.

Thanks again for your thoughtful contribution and for being part of our gardening community!

Dear Granny G.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with Sky Pencil Holly in South Carolina! We truly appreciate you taking the time to highlight how resilient and well-adapted these hollies have been in your hot climate. Your long-term success with the plants, especially combined with your gardening wisdom, really gives others great insight into their potential toughness and elegance when paired with boxwood hedges.

It’s fantastic to hear that your hollies have stood strong through both ice storms and lengthy heat spells—exactly the kind of dependable, ornamental plant many gardeners seek. For fellow gardeners wondering how to help their Sky Pencil hollies thrive in warmer areas, we recommend ensuring well-drained soil and providing occasional deep watering during dry periods. Mulching can also help preserve moisture and regulate root temperature in hotter months.

Dry Conditions

This is a great looking shrub but very intolerant of hot and dry conditions. The roots must be keep relatively moist through the warmest summer months. If the roots are allowed to completely dry-out, the plant will go into shock.

Hi Darron,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with the Sky Pencil Holly. We truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback! You're absolutely right that this shrub thrives best when the roots stay consistently moist, especially during hot and dry periods. Allowing the roots to dry out can definitely put the plant into shock, so your observation is a valuable tip for those caring for this elegant holly.

To help maintain moisture around the roots, we recommend applying a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant, which helps retain soil moisture and keeps temperatures cooler. Additionally, regular deep watering—not just light surface watering—can encourage a healthy root system and improve heat tolerance. If rainfall is scarce and summer temperatures rise significantly, consider using drip irrigation or soaker hoses to provide consistent moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sky pencil holly grow in shade?

  • Sky Pencil Holly tolerates partial shade but performs best in full sun to partial sun conditions. While it can grow in shadier spots, you'll get the most compact, dense foliage and strongest columnar form with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

How to plant sky pencil holly?

  • Plant Sky Pencil Holly in well-draining soil with partial to full sun exposure. Space plants less than 2 feet apart (trunk to trunk) for screening, or use as single specimens in perennial beds. Plant in spring or fall for best establishment, available at naturehills.com.

How tall does sky pencil holly grow?

  • Sky Pencil Holly typically reaches 6-8 feet tall and only 2-3 feet wide at maturity. This slow-growing evergreen maintains its narrow, columnar shape naturally without pruning. Space plants 2 feet apart for screening or use as single specimens in tight spaces.

Do sky pencil holly have berries?

  • Sky Pencil Holly is a female cultivar that produces small, pretty purple berries only when pollinated by a male plant. You'll need to plant a male Ilex crenata nearby to get the dark fruit. Without a male pollinator, you'll still have attractive foliage and form.

Can you show me photos of these?

  • Sky Pencil Holly creates a dramatic vertical accent with its pencil-thin columnar form and dark green foliage. You can view detailed photos of this unique evergreen on the product page at naturehills.com to see its striking upright growth habit.

Do deer eat sky pencil holly?

  • Sky Pencil Holly is naturally deer resistant due to its dense, small evergreen leaves that deer typically avoid. The columnar form and thick foliage make it an unappealing browsing target. Plant Sky Pencil confidently in deer-prone areas for reliable year-round screening.

How often should i water it?

  • Water Sky Pencil Holly deeply once weekly during its first growing season to establish roots. Once established, this drought-tolerant evergreen needs watering only during extended dry periods. Check soil moisture 2 inches down and water when dry to the touch.

Does Sky Pencil Holly need regular pruning to maintain its columnar shape?

  • Sky Pencil Holly maintains its narrow columnar form naturally without regular pruning. This well-behaved evergreen grows in a tight, pencil-thin habit that won't outgrow its space. Light pruning in late winter can remove any wayward branches if desired.

How much fertilizer does Sky Pencil Holly need and when should I apply it?

  • Sky Pencil Holly requires minimal fertilization due to its naturally slow growth habit. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. A light application of granular fertilizer around the root zone is sufficient for the entire growing season.
