Love the look of a beautiful lawn? If you live in the West or Southwest, you’ve had to carefully weigh your options for a great performing grass that abides by water conservation efforts. Well, this option is one of the best of the very best.

After years of research, the University of California released the ‘UC Verde’ Buffalo Grass (Buchloe dactyloides ‘UC Verde’). Nature Hills is offering expertly grown 72-plug trays that establish in as little as 90 days.

Buffalo Grass varieties give up to a 75% reduction in water consumption. They survive on as little as 12 inches of water a year and save you money. This improved variety requires a fraction of the amount of water needed for most turf grasses.

This remarkable grass produces a dense turf of soft, bright green, very fine leaf blades and is adapted to high heat and low water when planted as a lawn substitute. You’ll love the look and soft feel. You’ll definitely appreciate its performance and your low water bills. Go ahead, make your neighbors jealous.

Buffalo Grass is a native grass found across most of the Great Plains from Canada to Mexico. UC Verde Buffalo Grass is a modern cultivar of this special grass.

UC Verde is the most heat tolerant of all the Buffalo Grasses. It is now used extensively in areas of dry, intense heat. It grows to a maximum height of 4 to 8 inches in most locations and can be mowed as low as 1 inch.

For people who have grass allergies, the UC Verde is a very low—almost sterile—pollen producer. It also shows allelopathic tendencies, which means it suppresses weeds naturally.

Along with disease and pest resistance, UC Verde is a perfect choice for Western and Southwestern landscapes. Order yours today!

UC Verde grass can also be mowed aggressively to as low as 1 inch tall. Or, keep it 2 to 3 inches tall as recommended for best drought tolerance.

Planting UC Verde should be done in well-drained soil. Once established, this lawn substitute is great at competing and suppressing weed growth. Mow this perennial grass in the fall to maintain a neat, tidy look during its winter dormancy.

Here’s how to control erosion on slopes with very little maintenance. Simply allow it to grow out as a short meadow grass, reaching 6 to 8 inches tall. Mow once in fall.

Why not create an easy landscape bed with longer UC Verde Grass as bedding plant? You’ll love the soft look and watching the way the breeze moves through it. Order your trays today!

Surviving the drought in style.

Dry heat and dog pee are tough on any turf grass, but I maintain this grass pretty well with an as-needed treatment of ordinary yeast, activated with sugar and mixed with a gallon or two of water. This grass always looks good at my house, but this fixes where my dogs had gone pretty quickly.

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your creative and effective approach to maintaining your grass despite the challenges of dry heat and pet wear. We love hearing real-world tips like yours, especially when ordinary yeast activated with sugar helps your turf bounce back so well—it's such a natural and resourceful solution! Your dedication clearly shows through in the healthy appearance of your lawn.

If you ever want to explore other complementary treatments that might give your grass extra resilience during drought conditions or help with unexpected pet spots, we’d be happy to recommend some drought-tolerant grass varieties or specialized lawn care products tailored to pet owners.

Please feel free to reach out anytime—your successful lawn is an inspiration, and we’re excited to help you keep it thriving for yourself and your furry friends.
