Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give your Mojito Elephant Ear four to six hours of filtered sunlight or morning sun. While it can handle more light, partial shade helps maintain the deep purple flecks on the lime green leaves and prevents the foliage from scorching.
  • Soil: These plants crave rich, loamy soil that holds onto moisture. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to provide nutrients, or add peat moss to sandy soil to prevent it from drying out too quickly.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first season while the roots are getting established. Mature Mojitos are thirsty plants that thrive in boggy conditions, so you should water deeply three times a week if rain is scarce. If the soil dries out completely, the large leaves will droop and may lose their vibrant color.

Pruning Tips

Since these plants grow from the center, focus your pruning on the outermost, older leaves throughout the summer. Simply snip off any yellowing or tattered leaves at the base of the stem to keep the plant looking tidy and redirect energy to new growth. Think of it like a haircut; removing the tired foliage allows the fresh, speckled leaves to take center stage.

Fertilizer Needs

Colocasia loves rich, moist soil, and has the best coloration in full sun or part shade. Provide regular moisture and a well-drained organic location for best results. Easy care and hardy perennial in zones 8-11 however colder zones will not miss out! Gardeners in zones 3-7 may overwinter the corms indoors covered with dry peat moss or wood shavings. Dig up the corms after the leaves have been dried by frost. Place in a warm, dark and dry place with a temperature no higher than 50-60°F.
