If you're looking to add effortless beauty, sound, texture and motion to your landscape, then look no further than our easy-to-grow Soft Rush Grass (Juncus effusus)!
Some plants are naturally attracted to moisture, fewer others thrive, and this Soft Rush grass is definitely among their numbers. With the ability to grow in up to 4 feet of standing water, this tough plant is found in nature at the water's edge. Making itself perfectly at home in both salt and freshwater locales.
All types of common Rush are interesting, round-bladed, grass-like perennials. Lovely foliage like this is certainly an ornamental asset in the landscape!
The curious round leaves are tall and provide motion and texture to the landscape. Summer brings greenish seed heads that create a curious look to the garden and add to the swaying motion and rustling white noise. Looking like fluffy tufts, the flowers add an airy, fine-textured feel to the already delicate blades. Autumn brings rusty brown fall color to the entire plant.
How to Use Soft Rush Grass In The Landscape
If you have a creek, pond or pool on your property, Soft Rush Grass is a great option for dressing things up! With the exception of standing, stagnant water, any full sun wet site will suit Soft Rush just fine.
Water features and large water-garden containers are suitable for these plants. Even though Soft Rush Grass does wonderfully in wet conditions, it doesn't exclusively have to grow in it. Any moist garden soil or ground that's occasionally wet, works just as well.
Use in drainage areas, low spots in the landscape and at the end of the gutters. This ornamental grass grows well through winter's chill and summer's heat, provided you give it plenty to drink during the hottest times of the season.
Soft Rush Grass forms beautiful, straight clumps of grass-type foliage, giving a rustic, almost wild look in some uses, or giving a more formal, modern look in others. It all just depends on how it's used.
Our customers love Soft Rush Grass for rain and water gardens or for adding something special to swales for water runoff. Soft Rush Grass anchors wet spots where other types of plants might fail to thrive. It adds an architectural element everywhere it is planted.
All gardens benefit from soft rustling sounds and white noise. Four-season texture and motion also add to your garden's overall appearance.
Planting the verdant green stems in drifts gives a flowing, natural look en masse. And it's great for naturalizing and mass plantings in wet waste areas, natural landscaping and habitat restoration projects and marshes.
Wildlife too will appreciate this native's addition to the landscape! The species provides wildfowl food and nesting habitat, as well as providing cover for small mammals and aquatic creatures.
Historically, Soft Rush has been used for weaving baskets, mats and other crafts.
#ProPlantTips For Care
A hardy native to the United States, among all ornamental grasses, Soft Rush Grass may be the most carefree and have the fewest maintenance requirements.
Loving humus-rich soils, Soft Rush has a preference for full sun in USDA zones 4-9, so long as they have enough water. In areas with mild winters, this grass is evergreen and in areas where winters are a bit colder, it is a reliable perennial grass.
Rarely damaged by deer, Soft Rush regrows quickly even if something has had a nibble or two. In winter where these die back, just sheer the dormant plant to the ground, and watch it come back with fervor next spring.
Texture, sound and motion are always great additions to your garden. Combined with ease of care and hardy nature in tricky wet soils, you'll be glad you ordered Soft Rush Grass! Don't wait to order yours from Nature Hills today!
