A lovely small shrub that performs beautifully in shaded conditions? Ornamental features to die for? Yes, please!

Fragrant, variegated Girard's Rainbow Leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Girard's Rainbow') performs year in and year out to give you an elegant backdrop. Place several in a showy row to set the stage for outdoor living.

This gorgeous "workhorse" has cunning, pointed leaves that have a pretty polish and paint job. Variegated foliage combines green, and cream. Each leaf is touched with a pink highlight here and there. It's no wonder why garden designers rely on this special cultivar of a native plant to hang their designs upon. Carefree broadleaf evergreen Girard's Rainbow Leucothoe looks lovely in all seasons.

It is perhaps at its best in spring when the long racemes of bell-shaped blooms open up. You'll adore the fragrance … and the sight of butterflies and hummingbirds who come to visit! Use a few as filler in large indoor cut flower arrangements. Tuck a few in a bud vase or two on your bedside table for sweet dreams.

Also known as Girard's Rainbow Drooping Leucothoe and native shrubs known as Doghobble, these are hardy throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9 and handle shade and a wide range of growing conditions. Once the cold enters the air, Girard's Rainbow puts on a burgundy display for the fall!

Landscape Application:

Girard's Rainbow Leucothoe loves partial shade and shade gardens, has a weeping form, and adds a dynamic sense of motion to your space with long, arched branches that gracefully curtsey down to the ground. The leaves are held on long petioles, and catch slight breezes in a wholly attractive way.

Growing 3 - 4 feet tall and a bit wider, Rainbow Doghobbles are wonderful foundation plantings, mid-sized hedges for screening and privacy, and fantastically colorful backdrops and property definition! They are wonderfully showy and with an informal beauty all their own!

Plant Girard's Rainbow 30 inches apart for a solid row. They'll become a marvelous mass planting, a long hedge that doesn't mind being beneath the canopy of large trees, or wildlife-friendly groupings. You'll gain a front yard hedge that will turn heads!

  • Beautiful Green & Cream Variegated Foliage With A Touch of Pink
  • Coppery New Leaves
  • Glossy, Pointed Leaves Remain Showy All Year-Long
  • Compact Broadleaved Evergreen - Romantically Arching Branches
  • Fragrant, White, Bell-Shaped Flowers - Held on Long Racemes in Spring
  • Butterflies Appreciate The Spring Blooms
  • Modern Cultivar of Native Shrub
  • Hedges, Foundations, Colorful Backdrops & Showy Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Leucothoe are woodland natives that grow well in a site in part shade with deep, acid, well-drained soil amended with plenty of organic matter. Northern growers can plant theirs in more sun, but hot climates should consider a location with afternoon shade to full shade. Despite their leathery texture, the leaves are easily damaged by winter wind and hot sun. Plant in a protected location so northern drying winter winds won’t burn the leaves.

Provide regular water access for new installations and do not let them dry out. These hardy shrubs handle occasional flooding and high moisture sites. Water your shrubs very well throughout the autumn so they do not go into a cold climate winter with dry roots. A 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch or bark chips and/or compost is essential for a stress-free shrub!

  • Great for Partial to Full Shade (More Color In Part Sun)
  • Rich Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Regular Moisture
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Prune If Needed After Flowering
  • Easy Care & Low-Maintenance
  • Deer Tend To Leave It Alone
