Description
Garden Candy® Amy Jo Itoh Peony (Paeonia x 'Amy Jo') fills early summer with full, double flowers in a clear lemon yellow. The plant forms a rounded mound about 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, covers itself in blooms, and is hardy in zones 3 through 8.
Itoh peonies are crosses between garden peonies and tree peonies. They carry the large, rich flowers of a tree peony on a plant that dies back to the ground each winter like a garden peony. Clear yellow is rare among garden peonies and is one of the colors Itohs are known for, and Amy Jo delivers a pure lemon shade without darker flares at the center.
The flowers come in numbers, and the strong, semi-woody stems hold them up without staking. Set it in the middle or back of a border, along a foundation, or in a mixed bed where the yellow can brighten blue and purple companions. The flowers also cut well for a vase.
Plant it in full sun for the most flowers. Average, well-drained garden soil suits it, while soggy ground can rot the roots. Water deeply through the first season, and once it is established it handles dry spells. Deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone, and the foliage resists mildew. Like all peonies, it is toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten, so plant it away from where pets and livestock graze.
New Itoh plants often take a couple of seasons to settle in before they bloom heavily, and they get fuller every year after that. Add Garden Candy® Amy Jo Itoh Peony to your cart for clear yellow color in early summer.
