Growing Zones 7-9
Revamping a tired foundation planting? Or do you simply want to squeeze as much value out of your landscape as possible? Add this effortless superstar to your landscape this season! Introducing the Chinese Fringe Flower shrub (Loropetalum chinense 'Rubrum') that is sure to deliver a lovely show all year long!
Sweet, frilly bright pink-colored flowers make a delightful contrast against the dark reddish-purple foliage in early spring. These scented blooms are so eye-catching … but are never gaudy or overblown. They will however be smothered in bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds not once, but several times throughout the growing season!
These broadleaved evergreens simply shine in spring while they are decorated with lovely pink flowers that resemble Star Magnolia or Bee Balm! Consider trimming a few blooming branches to use indoors as lovely cut flower arrangements.
The inspiring reddish-purple new growth matures into a classic olive green. Sometimes spelled Fringeflower, Loropetalum are members of the Witch Hazel family. This gives it its tolerance to partial shade and its irresistible allure for butterflies and beneficial pollinators. Nature Hills offers several varieties of Loropetalum to complement this species. But this vase-shaped choice is the "real deal" for a fragrant flowering display, followed by crisp, clean foliage all year.
The no-fade color and bright repeat blooms defy the heat, sun, and humidity of USDA hardiness zones 7 to 9 and grow into an easy-to-manage and tidy 5-6 feet in height and 3-5 foot wide spread.
Planting and Application:
This exceptional choice adds value to your property! The year-round foliage and bright blooms add cheer and color every season but you'll mostly love the versatile and issue-free growth! Entertain and relax with their stylish charm as a backdrop, you'll be thrilled with their performance year in and year out!
Define your property line with a beautiful flowering hedge! Keep them trimmed, or allow them to be natural and full. A hedge along the front of your property will divide your yard from the sidewalk and street without offending the neighbors. Mass several together in an effortless lawn planting that will bring in the birds!
Many homeowners use this shrub as an alternative to Boxwood and Barberry bushes. To develop a solid row of these ornamental shrubs, plant them 30 inches apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
This shrub looks incredible against gray, stone, and brick exteriors. Use Fringe Flower bushes as a snazzy backdrop throughout the landscape beds to highlight everything else planted before it. Create modern foundation planting with color and charm! Repeat them along the length of your mixed-shrub borders. Rely on low-maintenance Loropetalum as a backdrop in your Butterfly Gardens.
Bring handsome structure to your garden design year-round with their help. Create pert edging of ornamental edible Bushel and Berry® Blueberry Glaze™ Blueberry for a double helping of healthy fruit or add hot pink perennials or flowering groundcover! Consider some of our Groundcover Sedum at their base to polish up the fully layered planting!
Fringe Flower bushes provide a sophisticated privacy screen for you and your family! Hide an ugly eyesore with frilly beauty, screen out those nosy neighbors while you bask around the pool, or simply envelop an outdoor seating area or firepit in pretty color all year round!
The lush, multi-stemmed growth habit provides cover and screening, but their accessible size won't make you feel like you're locked in a green prison. The color and fragrant flowers throughout the growing season are sure to bring smiles to both sides of this friendly living fence!
Keep them in oversized garden containers for many years. Chinese Fringe Flower shrubs add an exquisite, high-end look to your balcony, patio, or terrace.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant these low-maintenance shrubs in either full sun or partial shade. They require at least four hours of sunlight for the best bloom display. These shrubs are best situated in a protected location in full sun if you are in Hardiness Zone 7. Plant in a well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and elevate these shrubs in a raised bed, mound, or berm if you have poorly drained soil.
Apply fertilizer for acid-loving plants, such as Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Fertilizer twice a year in early spring and mid-summer, or according to the directions. The root systems will appreciate a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch, pine straw, or pine bark. Just be sure to pull it back so it is not touching the stems.
Give a moderate amount of water on a consistent schedule. Use the Finger Test to determine the frequency...poke your finger into the soil to see if it is starting to get dry. Once established, Loropetalum can be very drought tolerant.
Prune to shape your Chinese Fringe Flower after the main flush of blooms have finished. You'll likely see sporadic reblooming through the summer months. Every three years, prune out a few of the thickest, oldest branches out at ground level. Do this renewal pruning to keep your shrubs happy, vigorous, and beautiful for many, many years. Its rugged durability ensures that you'll have a minimum of care requirements!
