Brilliant panicles of reddish pink and yellow adorn the tops of every branch of the vibrant Briotti Red Horsechestnut Tree (Aesculus x carnea 'Briotii')! This hybrid cross between A. hippocastanum and A. pavia retains the highly sought-after characteristics of each parent tree. It is best used in a broad, open landscape so it doesn't become crowded, which in turn makes it a fantastic specimen tree! Such a diva - we understand not wanting to share one bit of the spotlight!
Sometimes called Horse Chestnut, Red Horsechestnut features darker red flowers with pinkish highlights and bright yellow accents. The larger flower panicles are held in upright terminal spikes up to 8-10 inches long in mid-spring. These attract a host of pollinators, hummingbirds and beneficial insects! The entire tree fills out in the palmate leaves in glossy bright green! It's a glorious sight in the spring when the entire tree fills out in these high-reaching spires of bloom!
Briotti still has those classic spiky shell-covered, glossy brown nuts that ripen in the fall, but unfortunately, these are not the edible kind of Horsechestnut and can be poisonous to humans. However, your squirrels and wildlife will go 'nuts' for them! They're still a gorgeous landscaping tree that's as ornamental as any other flowering tree out there!
Planting and Application:
Briotti Red is a standalone specimen or focal point for your property! That spring bloom display will set your landscape far apart from all the rest! Needing to spread its limbs and not share the spotlight, use as a central shade tree in your front yard or adorn a backyard stretch of hot grass that always gets burnt by the sun, it will be thankful for the shade and you will be too! Birds and wildlife love these trees, so be ready to keep the bird feeders full and enjoy squirrels playing in the canopy!
Horsechestnut Trees cast deep lush shade! Plant in out-of-the-way areas or in prairie and meadows where these trees reign in the wild. Native Horse Chestnuts are like Oaks and spread their far-reaching, slightly drooping branches in the most elegant and southern-charm kind of way! They rival the Live Oaks of the south with their spreading limbs! You'll definitely want to park an Adirondack Chair or two beneath the cooling shade!
- Tall Upright Growing Pink, Red & Yellow Flowers
- Unique Palmate Green Foliage
- Spiky Husks & Glossy Brown Inedible Nuts
- Fantastic Shade Tree
- Specimen & Smaller Sized Lawn Tree
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Horsechestnut Trees are cold and heat tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 8 and do well in both full sun and partial shade. But they don't like being crowded by lots of other trees. Growing 20-30 feet in height and width, they'll look best if you leave those grand branches growing to the ground, but if you do need to prune - only prune after flowering so you won't miss any of next year's flowers! Plant in moderate moisture and in almost any well-drained soil. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the entire root zone to make cleaning up the spiky husks and nuts easier.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderate Moisture
- Highly Adaptable to Soil Type, pH & Moisture Once Established
- Non-Edible Nuts - Not Suitable For Around Pets & Horses
- Prune After Flowering To Preserve the Flowers
Briotti Red Horsechestnut Tree will grace your yard like the highly ornamental diva it is! With blooms like this - you'd not want to share the spotlight either! Hurry and order your own and be the first on your block to plant it! Now available for shipping at NatureHills.com!
