How to Use Lambert Sweet Cherry Tree in the Landscape
All across the country, homeowners are re-discovering the earthy pleasure of growing fruiting plants in their landscape. Edible landscaping is a long-lasting trend that makes the most of your soil and sunshine.
Lambert Sweet Cherry is a pretty tree in its own right. With lovely spring blooms and the knockout, deep, dark fruit set, you’ll always have something to study and appreciate.
Trust us, you might even find yourself getting giddy with anticipation of your annual crop! There are a million ways to get the most from a sweet cherry. Pies, preserves, fruit leather, as a healthy sweetener in sauces and fresh from the tree, of course.
Plant a group of 2 or 3 varieties that will pollinate each other and extend the harvest season. Van, Black Tartarian, and Rainier will all work to pollinate Lambert.
Please note that neither Bing Cherry, nor Royal Ann Cherry will pollinate Lambert.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant your Lambert in full sun and well-drained soil. It should thrive with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. The more sun, the better!
If you need to improve the drainage of your soil, create a raised bed or mound. Add additional soil to 18 inches high and 3 feet wide. You'll plant directly in that mound.
Ensure that the planting site has plenty of air circulation for the best results. Don't plant too close to structures or in low-lying areas that might trap air.
Morning sun will quickly dry off the overnight dew. The drying power of the morning sun keeps your plants healthy.
Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Mulch to a depth of 3 inches and spread to 3 feet outside the canopy.
Sculpt your fruit trees with horizontal or 45 degree angled scaffolding branches. Careful management will improve the health and productivity of your tree.
Summer prune your Cherry trees to keep them under 10 feet tall. This is called size control pruning, and it makes harvest and netting for birds a lot easier.
