I bought the 2 to 3 foot southern magnolia. Arrived in good shape, very impressed with the packaging. I got what I ordered. In the ground & it was just above my yard stick. Not sure how fast they grow but I'm guessing it will be a while before I have the classic large stately southern magnolia..

Hi Renae,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your 2 to 3 foot Southern Magnolia! We’re delighted to hear that your tree arrived in great condition and that the packaging met your expectations—that attention to care is something we strive for with every shipment.

Southern Magnolias are truly wonderful trees. While they do start out modest in size like yours, their growth rate is generally moderate—often about 12 to 24 inches per year under ideal conditions. It may take several years for your tree to reach that classic large, stately presence, but with proper care, patience, and a good spot in your yard with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil, you’ll get there! To encourage healthy growth, be sure to water deeply during dry periods and consider mulching to retain moisture and maintain soil temperature.

If you ever have questions about optimal care or seasonal tips, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support your garden’s journey every step of the way.

Wishing you happy planting,

Back for another one

I'm back to buy another one for the other back corner of my yard. I lost a fair amount of leaves on the Southern Magnolia I bought last year but I asked someone down the street who has a full grown mature magnolia & they say that is normal. It seems to be doing great. Please send me another good one!

Hi Babs,

Thank you so much for coming back to Nature Hills for another Southern Magnolia! We truly appreciate your trust in us and are delighted to hear your first tree is doing well despite the leaf loss you experienced. It’s great that you were able to connect with a neighbor who helped reassure you—seasonal leaf drop can indeed be normal for magnolias, especially as they adjust to their environment.

Since you’re adding another tree in your yard’s back corner, a little extra care can go a long way. Make sure it’s planted in well-draining soil and receives morning sun with some afternoon shade to reduce stress during hotter months. Consistent watering - especially during dry spells - followed by a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can encourage healthy, robust growth while minimizing leaf drop future seasons.

We’ll carefully select a healthy Southern Magnolia from our stock to ensure it’s ready to thrive in your yard soon! If you need guidance on planting or ongoing care, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to help with tips tailored to your specific needs.

Wishing you happy planting,

Hello Babs,

Thank you so much for returning to NatureHills.com and for sharing your experience with your Southern Magnolia! We’re delighted to hear it’s overall doing great and appreciate you checking in with a neighbor—a mature magnolia does tend to naturally shed older leaves from time to time, so that you’re seeing some leaf loss aligns with typical growth patterns.

We’ll be happy to send you another healthy Southern Magnolia for your yard’s other corner. When your new tree arrives, placing it in a spot with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and plenty of sunlight will help it thrive even more. Also, mulching around the base and ensuring consistent watering, especially through the first couple of seasons, can promote strong, healthy growth and reduce stress.

If you want, we’re always here to offer tips for ongoing care or answer any questions about your magnolia—or anything else in your garden!

Patience will surely pay off as they grow into that majestic tree you’re envisioning over time. To encourage steady growth, make sure your magnolia is planted in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with plenty of mulch to retain moisture, along with full to part shade. Prefers full sun

I have 2. One gets a lot more shade. The one with more sun has grown considerably taller. It also seems the one with more shade doesn't get as many of classic southern magnolia flowers. I'm happy with both. Thanks Nature Hills.

Hi Nic N.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Southern Magnolias! It’s wonderful to hear both are thriving, even if their growth and flowering differ based on sunlight—your observation about the fuller sun leading to taller growth and more blossoms is spot on. Southern Magnolias do indeed prefer full sun or partial shade for the best floral impact.

If you're looking to help the shadier tree produce more flowers, consider gently pruning any surrounding plants that might be limiting light, or adding reflective mulch to brighten its environment. Also, balanced fertilization during the growing season can encourage healthy growth and blooming.

We’re delighted to be part of your planting journey—thank you again for trusting us with your garden needs.

Hi Nic,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your southern magnolias! You’ve made a keen observation — southern magnolias do tend to thrive and produce more classic blooms when given plenty of sunlight, so it makes perfect sense that your sunlit tree is flourishing more robustly than the one in shade. It’s wonderful to hear you’re happy with both of your trees regardless!

If you’re looking to help that shadier magnolia produce more flowers, you might consider gently pruning some surrounding vegetation to increase light exposure or making sure it’s getting good soil nutrition, which can promote healthier growth and blossoms. Also, regular watering and applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring might boost its flowering potential.

Feel free to reach out with any other questions — we’re always here to help your garden thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the growth rate of Southern Magnolia trees?

  • Southern Magnolias are moderate to slow growers, typically adding 1-2 feet per year until reaching their mature height of 80 feet. In zones 6-10, expect 10-15 years to see substantial size and flowering. Plant with patience and give them plenty of space for their eventual 40-foot spread.

Does Southern Magnolia grow well in my climate/zone?

  • Southern Magnolia thrives in USDA zones 6-10, handling heat, humidity, and sun with ease. These southeastern natives grow 80 feet tall and 40 feet wide, so ensure you have adequate space. Check your zone and shop at Nature Hills for healthy specimens.

How much sun does a Southern Magnolia need?

  • Southern Magnolias thrive in full sun to partial shade, tolerating heat and intense sunlight throughout USDA zones 6-10. These tough natives actually prefer full sun exposure for the best flowering performance. Plant yours where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for maximum blooms.

How far from the house or structures should I plant a Southern Magnolia?

  • Plant Southern Magnolias at least 20-25 feet from structures, as they reach 40 feet wide and 80 feet tall at maturity. These large evergreens need adequate space for their extensive root system and canopy spread. Consider the tree's full-grown size when selecting your planting location to avoid future foundation or roof issues.

Does Southern Magnolia need pruning, and when?

  • Southern Magnolia requires minimal pruning due to its naturally strong branching structure. Prune only to remove dead wood or shape in late winter before spring blooming. You can train it into a shrubby form by keeping lower limbs. Shop quality specimens at Nature Hills.

Can I keep a Southern Magnolia in a pot, and for how long?

  • Southern Magnolias can be grown in large containers for several years, but their eventual 80-foot height and 40-foot spread make them temporary container plants. Young trees will outgrow most pots within 3-5 years as their strong root systems develop. Plan to transplant to your landscape once the tree reaches 6-8 feet tall.

What are common problems or diseases with Southern Magnolia, and how to prevent them?

  • Southern Magnolias in zones 6-10 are remarkably resistant to pests and diseases when properly established. Scale insects and fungal leaf spot can occasionally occur in poorly drained soils or overly humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and plant in well-draining soil to prevent most issues.
