People treasure their Magnolias for their magnificent strength, fantastically fragrant blossoms and incomparable beauty! The grandeur of the Southern Magnolia tree (Magnolia grandiflora) can be yours today with the help of Nature Hills!

The broadleaf evergreen leaves are dark, glossy olive on the top and soft brown on their underside, remaining a constant presence all year round in your landscape! In spring the entire tree becomes festooned in enormous white satellites that smell divine! The bumblebees, butterflies, and other pollinators will agree and relish in the nectar and pollen they offer! Fall brings reddish berry-like seedpods that the birds adore!

Growing into a tall, oval presence up to 80 feet in height and 40 feet in width, these natives of the Southeastern US have strong stems and branches. The gray smooth bark and strong lumber were regarded for making furniture! Growing throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 10, these trees shrug off heat, sun, humidity, pests, and disease!

Planting and Application:

These are supremely ornamental lawn trees, adding their delightful year-round presence to your landscape while boosting curb appeal! Everyone on the block will adore these flowering trees when in bloom! But only you and your pollinators and Hummingbirds will be able to enjoy their sweet lemony scent! Use the Magnolia near your patio, picture window, or front entrance anywhere you'll see it from indoors and smell it outside.

This fragrance of the 8-10 inch wide flowers is another reason to plant the Southern Magnolia as a backyard shade tree, casting cooling relief, perfuming your seating areas and glowing as it towers over the Moon Garden! If you have the room, you’ll love the natural look created by using 3, 5, or 7 of them in a grouping that wildlife will love!

You can train your tree into a more shrubby form, keeping the limbs growing to the ground. Allowing you to use these evergreens as tall privacy screens and windbreaks! Imagine a fragrant hedge that blocks a nosy neighbor, hides an eyesore, screens your yard from the street, and creates year-round garden walls around your outdoor entertaining rooms!

This tree will provide a pleasing background for other smaller flowering trees and shrubs in your yard, particularly coniferous evergreens!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Magnolia trees need sun, both for the most blooms and for the strongest growth. Plant in a well-drained slightly acidic soil with regular moisture access, especially for their first year in the ground. In its wild setting, it grows in coastal wetlands in acidic loamy soils. For the best performance, give it an acid fertilizer like Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer in spring and mid-summer to maintain low soil pH.

Once established, just give your Magnolia a regular schedule of supplemental water, if rainfall isn't sufficient. This is especially important when the plants are young. Provide 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to hold in soil moisture more consistently and insulate the roots.

Prune your tree after those magnificent flowers have faded, removing crossing limbs and opening the interior to sunlight penetration and air circulation. Magnolias are evergreens that keep their leaves all year round, but old leaves do turn yellow and drop to make room for fresh new leaves.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Slightly Acidic Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Disease & Insect Resistant

Add the southern charm and lasting legacy of the grand native Southern Magnolia Tree when you order yours today from Nature Hills Nursery! You will enjoy their beauty and year-round presence without the worry your ornamental will turn into a diva that demands all of your time!

Small but nice

I bought the 2 to 3 foot southern magnolia. Arrived in good shape, very impressed with the packaging. I got what I ordered. In the ground & it was just above my yard stick. Not sure how fast they grow but I'm guessing it will be a while before I have the classic large stately southern magnolia..

Dear Renae,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Southern Magnolia purchase! We’re delighted to hear that your tree arrived healthy and that you were pleased with our packaging—it’s always our goal to ensure your plants arrive safe and sound.

Southern Magnolias are indeed known for their slow to moderate growth, typically gaining about 12 to 24 inches per year in ideal conditions. Patience will surely pay off as they grow into that majestic tree you’re envisioning over time. To encourage steady growth, make sure your magnolia is planted in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with plenty of mulch to retain moisture, along with full to part shade. Water regularly, especially during warmer months, but allow the soil to dry a bit between waterings to prevent root issues.

If you’d like, we also have great resources on Southern Magnolia care linked on our website, including tips on fertilizing schedules and pest management that can help your tree thrive.

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills—we’re here whenever you need guidance along the way!

Back for another one

I'm back to buy another one for the other back corner of my yard. I lost a fair amount of leaves on the Southern Magnolia I bought last year but I asked someone down the street who has a full grown mature magnolia & they say that is normal. It seems to be doing great. Please send me another good one!

Hello Babs,

Thank you so much for returning to NatureHills.com and for sharing your experience with your Southern Magnolia! We’re delighted to hear it’s overall doing great and appreciate you checking in with a neighbor—a mature magnolia does tend to naturally shed older leaves from time to time, so that you’re seeing some leaf loss aligns with typical growth patterns.

We’ll be happy to send you another healthy Southern Magnolia for your yard’s other corner. When your new tree arrives, placing it in a spot with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and plenty of sunlight will help it thrive even more. Also, mulching around the base and ensuring consistent watering, especially through the first couple of seasons, can promote strong, healthy growth and reduce stress.

If you want, we’re always here to offer tips for ongoing care or answer any questions about your magnolia—or anything else in your garden!

Hi Babs,

Thank you so much for coming back to Nature Hills for another Southern Magnolia! We truly appreciate your trust in us and are delighted to hear your first tree is doing well despite the leaf loss you experienced. It’s great that you were able to connect with a neighbor who helped reassure you—seasonal leaf drop can indeed be normal for magnolias, especially as they adjust to their environment.

Since you’re adding another tree in your yard’s back corner, a little extra care can go a long way. Make sure it’s planted in well-draining soil and receives morning sun with some afternoon shade to reduce stress during hotter months. Consistent watering - especially during dry spells - followed by a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can encourage healthy, robust growth while minimizing leaf drop future seasons.

We’ll carefully select a healthy Southern Magnolia from our stock to ensure it’s ready to thrive in your yard soon! If you need guidance on planting or ongoing care, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to help with tips tailored to your specific needs.
