Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this Dianthus a home in full sun where it receives at least 6 hours of direct light per day. While it can survive in partial shade, the stems may become leggy and flower production will significantly decrease.
  • Soil: Excellent drainage is critical for this plant, as it hates having "wet feet" and is prone to crown rot in soggy conditions. If your soil is heavy clay, mix in plenty of organic matter or grit to keep the texture loose and free-draining.

Watering Requirements

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the roots establish, ensuring the soil remains moist but never waterlogged. Once established, this plant is moderately drought-tolerant; allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to keep the root system healthy.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety is a rebloomer, shear the plant back lightly after the first flush of blooms fades to encourage a fresh wave of flowers later in the season. Perform a general cleanup in early spring by trimming away any winter-damaged foliage to make room for new green growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release flower fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to appear. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or feeding late in the season, as this can promote soft, leafy growth that is susceptible to winter damage and reduces bloom quantity.

Deadhead after blooms fade, and prune mounds in late winter or early spring to clean the mounds of dead foliage.
