Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lollipop crabapple the same as Malus 'Lollizam'?

  • Lollipop® is the trademarked name and 'Lollizam' is the cultivar name for the same crabapple, so you may see either one on a plant tag. Both describe the same slow-growing tree with a dense, globe-shaped crown, fragrant white spring flowers and small red fruit, offered as a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® tree.

Is Lollipop crabapple fruit red or yellow?

  • Lollipop® crabapple fruit ripens a bright red. The small fruits, about 3/8 inch across, follow the white spring flowers and color up later in the season. They add a second round of color after the bloom fades and give songbirds something to feed on, and fallen fruit is small enough to sweep up quickly.

How well does Lollipop crabapple resist scab and fire blight?

  • Lollipop® has good resistance to apple scab and fire blight and excellent resistance to cedar-apple rust and powdery mildew. Humid summers raise disease pressure on any crabapple, so plant it where the sun reaches the whole crown and air moves freely through the branches, and rake up fallen leaves in autumn.

Is Lollipop crabapple safe around dogs and cats?

  • Treat Lollipop® crabapple as a low-level risk for pets. Crabapple seeds, stems and leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can be a problem for dogs, cats and horses when eaten in quantity. Fallen fruit is the most likely source of exposure, so pick up heavy drops in the areas where your pets play.
