Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This perennial requires at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily to maintain its sturdy stems and vibrant yellow color. While it can survive in partial shade, the stems often become floppy and the flower clusters will be significantly smaller and less intense.
  • Soil: It thrives in lean, well-drained soil and actually prefers "poor" ground over rich, organic beds. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound or add pea gravel to the planting hole to ensure water moves away from the roots quickly.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, Sunny Seduction™ is exceptionally drought-tolerant and rarely needs supplemental water unless the foliage begins to wilt or curl during a heatwave. Overwatering or inconsistent moisture often leads to root rot or weak, lush growth that cannot support the weight of the flower heads.

Pruning Tips

This plant blooms on new wood, so you should cut the entire clump back to the basal foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. During the summer, "deadhead" or remove spent flower stalks down to the next lateral bud to encourage a second flush of blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. This process is like a mid-season refresh that prevents the plant from putting all its energy into seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring as new green growth appears. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or late-season feeding, as this creates soft, succulent growth that is highly susceptible to powdery mildew and winter damage. Yarrow is a hardy herbaceous perennial and should be planted in full sun and is tolerant to hot humid summers. Yarrow can tolerate poor soil conditions but does best in lean, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil. They can be adaptable to almost any soil with adequate drainage. New plants should be watered regularly and not allowed to dry out completely.

Deep waterings are better than frequent surface waterings, encouraging the roots to delve deep into the ground for moisture, and making them more resilient in the long run. Top-dress with a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to not only make them look better but also hold moisture and insulate the roots best. Once established, allow your Yarrow to dry between waterings for best success because they despise soggy soil.

It's recommended to remove faded flowers to encourage more growth and divide the mounds every 3-4 years. Deadheading enhances their overall appearance and encourages the plants to rebloom. In spring, before you see new growth, trim away any of last year's stems to clean up the crown. Top off with a fresh layer of mulch or compost!
