Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-8
Happy yellow flowers, the lovely sunny color in your yard, but prefer to keep things nice and easy? Try the durable, sweet little Goldstar Potentilla (Potentilla fruiticosa 'Goldstar') across your landscape. It's easy charm and enormous flower power can perform like a champ without any fuss or muss. The 5-petaled, 1 to 2-inch, single blossoms are so bright and sunny that your shrub will appear to be covered in "gold stars" throughout the season.
Commonly called a Shrubby Cinquefoil referring to the leaves, Goldstar Potentilla is an extremely popular little shrub beloved for its prolific, showy bloom of bright, yellow flowers all summer long. In fact, from late spring right up until the first frost, Goldstar's splash of bright color will be a near-constant source of attention in your yard.
Goldstar has one of the largest flowers of the cultivars. This is a mounding deciduous shrub that stays compact and nicely branched. It looks full and lush all season. It begins blooming 2 weeks earlier than the popular Goldstar selection. More compact and densely branched, this is the perfect flowering shrub for those with limited space. The light green, pinnate leaves do a terrific job of filling out as a backdrop to the starry blossoms, the perfect backdrop for the intense blooms.
Butterflies adore this bright shrub, and so will you! One of the few Potentillas that can handle USDA growing zone 8 climates, but also down to zone 3 winter chill! Growing to a 2-3 foot tall little shrub that spreads 3-4 feet in width, you'll fill areas around your sunny landscape with bright cheerful color that won't demand much from you in return!
Planting and Application:
The fine-textured leaves seem graceful but the chipper little blooms and easy care nature? Goldstar Potentilla is like planting sunshine! Just about every yard can use a few right-sized Goldstar Potentillas. They are versatile and can fill many landscape applications.
They are fantastic as an attractive border along your perennial garden. Wherever you use plant them, then get ready to see the butterflies dancing! Nature loves the color yellow, and Goldstar delivers this sunny hue in spades. Use a few in each of your garden beds to help tie the whole design together. Add them as Fillers in large containers and be sure to include one or two for some colorful accents by your front door.
Try them as a mass planting to cover ground in a wide area. They'll prevent erosion on slopes and creek beds, too. For mass planting, use staggered, zig-zagging rows to fill in your planting pattern 2 feet on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Mulch between plants and keep the new planting weeded until Goldstar fills in completely.
If you have rocky, thin, or poor soils, try this rugged native shrub. It grows across a wide range of climates. It can really handle the bright sunshine. If you have a hot spot in your yard, this is an invaluable flowering plant. Plant in that hot, xeric hell strip along the roadside or sidewalk, along walkways and sunny paths. They can even be used in city environments. In fact, Potentilla is a go-to, low plant for many urban designers. There aren't many ground-hugging flowering shrubs that put up with road salt, pet traffic, and pollution.
Get ready for compliments! You can decide if you want to spill the beans about how incredibly easy these tough little plants really are. This winning little shrub takes it all and just smiles in the sun.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Goldstar is a hardy plant, mildew resistant, and does well in cold climates. It's tolerant of poor soils and urban environments. This sun lover will definitely perform best with full sun. Give it at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Plant in areas with good drainage, but Goldstar is not particular about soil and can tolerate a wide range of soil types.
In dry zone 8, plant it where it will receive protection from the worst of the afternoon sun. It doesn't do well in extreme humidity, so gardeners in the Southeast may have to admire it on trips to the North. Recommended on many Firescaping/Fire-wise lists, the Goldstar Potentilla becomes a valuable plant in areas where firescapes are required for safety.
Once established, this plant requires little water. Give new plants regular water during the first season, plus a layer of mulch over the soil surface. In extreme heat, we say that it's a good idea to protect your investment with a bit of supplemental water. Watch your plant for any sign of stress.
Prune after flowering to keep plants in featured areas looking manicured and neat. Cut them back hard in late winter when needed to rejuvenate them. When naturalized, it requires no pruning.
