Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the heaviest flowering. Sonic Bloom® Punch can tolerate light afternoon shade, especially in warmer zones (7-8), but flowering will diminish noticeably with more than a few hours of shade per day.

Soil: This weigela adapts well to most garden soils as long as drainage is reasonable. It tolerates clay better than many shrubs, but if your soil stays waterlogged after rain, work in compost and coarse grit before planting or build up the planting area slightly to improve runoff. Moderately fertile soil is ideal; overly rich soil tends to push leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings. Once the root system is established, Sonic Bloom® Punch handles short dry spells reasonably well but performs best with consistent moisture through summer. Wilting foliage and reduced reblooming are usually the first signs the plant is drought-stressed and needs a deep drink.

Pruning Tips

Sonic Bloom® Punch blooms on old wood in spring, so timing your pruning is important. If you need to shape the shrub, do it immediately after the first flush of spring flowers fades, before the plant sets new buds for its summer rebloom cycle. Avoid pruning in late summer or fall, which removes next year's flower buds. Light annual shaping right after spring bloom keeps the plant tidy and compact without sacrificing the season-long color show.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, balanced shrub fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 formula in early spring just as new growth emerges. A second light application in early to mid-summer can support the reblooming cycle. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers later in the season, as they encourage soft new growth that is vulnerable to winter damage.

Plant Sonic Bloom Punch Weigela in full sun in well-drained soil for the most prolific flowering and rebloom. This easy-care shrub performs best with consistent moisture during establishment and benefits from a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth and multiple bloom cycles. Deadheading is not required, the plant manages its own rebloom cycle. For best results, give it a light shaping after the main spring bloom to encourage dense new growth that will carry the summer and fall flower display. A must-have for hummingbird gardens.
