The tree arrived timely and was packaged very secure

The tree arrived timely and was packaged very secure. We planted a couple days later and it is a healthy looking tree!!

Whitespire Birch is a great choice, and it sounds like yours is off to a solid start. Getting it in the ground within a couple of days of arrival is exactly the right move. Keep it well watered through the first season while the roots settle in, and it should reward you for years to come. Thanks for sharing the update, Conita!

Just planted 2 of these trees, all good so far. The trunks are pretty flimsy and bend over after watering. Time will tell how well these do!

Whitespire Birch establishes best when it arrives in good condition, so it's great to hear the tree made the trip without any issues. Give it consistent moisture through the first season and it should reward you with that distinctive white bark for years to come. Thanks for letting us know, Andrew.

Excellent trees full of life taking to transplant well and looking forward to watching them grow.

Whitespire Birch transplants beautifully when it gets a good start, and it sounds like yours did exactly that. Once established, the white bark really starts to stand out, especially as the canopy fills in over the next couple of seasons. Thanks for sharing, Ronald, and enjoy watching them grow.

It sounds like your tree is off to a great start with all those promising buds. We appreciate your patience during the delivery process, and we’re glad the wait was worth it!

Already gorgeous!

Planted a lovely, well-shipped little #5 multistem just into Zone 6a (can walk to 6b), feet in the shade, head in the sun, Root Booster, native rich organic compost earth, native leaf litter mulch away from stems, on 4/22. By 5/12, he's grown at least a full 12", all leafed out, almost ready to stake up. Deer haven't touched him. Beautiful healthy leaves, clearly enjoys a good drink. Enjoying him already, can't wait to see him grow up.

Dear ILikeJerseyBest,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful update! We're thrilled to hear your #5 multistem is thriving with such healthy growth and not only that, keeping the deer at bay is a huge win. Your thoughtful planting approach—with toes shaded, head sunlit, and boosting roots with native organic compost—truly shows in its vibrancy and health.

It sounds like you're providing exactly the right environment for a flourishing specimen. If you’d like to continue supporting your plant as it grows, staking early like you mentioned is a smart choice to promote strong development. Feel free to reach out if you want tips on pruning or pest prevention down the road!

Enjoy watching your new plant’s journey, and thank you again for trusting NatureHills.com with your green family member.

only one problem, fedex was

only one problem, fedex was a day late even though their tracking said out for shipment the day prior, which caused the tree to overheat, within a day half the leaves turned yellow from this, but I have been able to have the tree flourish

Hello Ronald,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We truly appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear that the FedEx delay caused some stress for your tree. It’s wonderful to know that despite this challenge, you were able to nurse the tree back to health and help it flourish—that kind of care makes all the difference in maintaining a thriving garden.

If you ever face transportation or acclimation issues like this again, placing the tree in a shaded, well-ventilated spot and gently misting the leaves can help reduce heat stress. Additionally, checking your shipment as soon as it arrives and giving the tree a gentle soak in water (if safe for the species) can speed recovery.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about ongoing care or need specific tips tailored to your tree. We’re always here to support your planting journey.

Whitespire Birch

For $50 I was really expecting something a little taller than two feet. I am happy, however, to have them. They are next to impossible to purchase in my location.

Hello Lawrence,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us! We completely understand wanting a taller Whitespire Birch when you buy, especially for such a popular and hard-to-find tree in your area. While our $50 size usually runs about two feet tall, we’re glad to hear you’re happy to have these special additions to your landscape.

If you’re interested in larger sizes in the future, we occasionally offer more mature specimens as they come into stock—please feel free to reach out anytime, and we’d be happy to notify you. Meanwhile, starting with a younger tree like yours gives it plenty of time to develop strong roots right in your garden, supporting robust long-term growth.

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills and for giving this beautiful tree a new home.

White Birch multi trunk

The tree arrived in good condition but it's difficult to determine it's health this time of year because the leaves were yellow and they have all fallen off by now. I'm sure it has to do with the cold weather we are having now and I hope that it buds in the spring.

Dear John,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your White Birch multi trunk. You’re right—the current cold weather and leaf drop are typical for this time of year, and it can be tricky to gauge the tree’s health during dormancy. Your hopeful outlook for spring is spot on; when temperatures rise, you should start to see new buds forming, signaling that your tree is ready to thrive once again.

To support your birch’s health through the winter months, we suggest avoiding heavy pruning until you see defined buds in early spring. Also, if you notice any lingering bare spots at that time, feel free to reach out to us, and we’d be happy to provide additional care tips.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review, John. We look forward to hearing about your tree’s progress in the coming seasons!

Dear John,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful feedback with us. You’re absolutely right—yellow leaves and the bare appearance of your White Birch this time of year are commonly due to the cold weather and natural dormancy. Trees often shed their leaves to conserve energy as they prepare for spring. We understand it can be tough to gauge the health of your tree during these colder months, but if the branches feel firm and not brittle, that’s a good sign your birch is resting and should produce fresh buds as temperatures warm.

To help support your tree’s revival in spring, consider lightly watering if we experience a dry spell and avoid any pruning before buds appear to ensure optimal growth. We also have a great plant care resource hub that can guide you through seasonal care for your White Birch, and we’re always here if you have any questions.

We appreciate your trust in Nature Hills, and we’re rooting for your tree’s vibrant return this spring!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the growth rate and mature shape of Whitespire Birch?

  • Whitespire Birch grows into a tall, stately tree with a distinctive pyramidal shape. The bark develops its characteristic white color when trunks reach 2-3 inches in diameter. This elegant accent tree works well in colder zones as a sophisticated focal point for front or backyard landscaping.

Is Whitespire Birch resistant to bronze birch borer and other pests?

  • Whitespire Birch offers good pest resistance, including better tolerance to bronze birch borer than other birch varieties. This improved Gray Birch selection was specifically chosen for its disease and pest resistance. For best results in colder zones, shop quality specimens at naturehills.com.

Does Whitespire Birch have issues with Japanese beetles or leaf miners?

  • Whitespire Birch offers good pest resistance, making it less susceptible to common birch problems than other varieties. This improved Gray Birch selection was specifically chosen for its ability to withstand typical pest issues. For best results, plant in appropriate colder zones where the tree thrives naturally.

What are the soil requirements for planting Whitespire Birch?

  • Whitespire Birch adapts to most well-draining soils and tolerates poor conditions better than other birch varieties. This hardy tree thrives in colder zones where many ornamental trees struggle. Plant in spring or fall for best establishment.

How much sun exposure does Whitespire Birch need?

  • Whitespire Birch thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. This adaptable tree performs well with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though it can tolerate some afternoon shade in warmer areas. For best bark color development and overall health, choose a sunny location when planting.

How should I water and care for a newly planted Whitespire Birch?

  • Water deeply twice weekly for the first growing season, ensuring soil stays consistently moist but not waterlogged. Birches prefer steady moisture and will struggle in drought conditions. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Can Whitespire Birch tolerate wet, clay, or high pH soils?

  • Whitespire Birch prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soils and struggles in heavy clay or consistently wet conditions. Clay soils should be amended with compost to improve drainage before planting. Plant in locations with good air circulation to prevent root rot in moisture-retentive soils.

What size do Whitespire Birch trees come in for shipping, and are they bare root or container-grown?

  • Whitespire Birch trees are typically shipped as container-grown specimens in various sizes, from young saplings to more mature trees. The bark develops its characteristic white color when trunks reach 2-3 inches in diameter. Choose based on your timeline preferences and budget for establishment.

Is Whitespire Birch suitable for my hot/humid climate south of zone 7?

  • Whitespire Birch is specifically recommended for colder zones and won't tolerate hot, humid climates south of zone 7. This tree thrives in cooler northern conditions where it can develop its signature white bark and maintain good health. Consider heat-tolerant alternatives like Southern Live Oak or Bald Cypress for your region instead.
