Joe in Atlanta.

Bought two of these this past spring 2018. One has two blossoms on it when it arrived. The other one looked very dry, but I planted it anyway to give it a chance. It never got a leaf on it and was dead. They were both bare root plants. The first time I ever had a problem with a mail order tree. Now that they have more available I will order another. They are guaranteed to grow, but if they don't I have to buy another for half price plus shipping. I think it should be free plus the added shipping.

Dear Joseph,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Autumn Blooming Cherry Trees. We truly appreciate your honest feedback and are sorry to hear that one of your trees didn’t make it, especially since this is the first challenge you've had with our mail-order plants. Your patience and willingness to plant a “dry” tree show your dedication as a gardener, and we want to support you fully in your gardening journey.

You’re absolutely right to point out you shouldn’t have to cover extra costs beyond the half-price replacement, and we appreciate your thoughts on the shipping charges. Our plant guarantee is designed to give you peace of mind, though we understand your perspective on the refund policy. While our typical protocol offers the half-price replenishment with dedicated shipping costs, I encourage reaching out directly to our customer care team when placing your next order for a possible review of those charges—they may be able to provide further assistance or consider exceptions based on past experiences.

In the meantime, since you’re planning to give the Atlanta climate another go, here are a few tips that might support successful planting and growth for your next cherry trees:

- Ensure soil is well-drained yet moist, ideally planting in early spring or late winter before sap flow starts.
- Apply mulch to help retain moisture and regulate root temperature, especially in bare root specimens.
- Gentle watering for the first few weeks is key, avoiding over-saturation which can cause root issues.
- Inspect trees upon arrival and consider giving the roots a mild soaking before planting to encourage quicker root establishment.

Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions or concerns—we’re here to help with personalized advice to help your Apache Blooming Cherry thrive next time.

Thank you once again for trusting Nature Hills. We look forward to helping you plant and grow with great success ahead!

Dear Joseph,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Autumn Blooming Cherry Trees. We truly appreciate you choosing Nature Hills and taking the time to provide such thoughtful feedback. It’s wonderful to hear that one of your trees bloomed so beautifully, though we’re sorry the other did not survive despite your best efforts.

Bare root plants can sometimes be a bit challenging at first, especially if they appear dry upon arrival. You did the right thing by giving it a chance to grow since sometimes they need extra care and patience during establishment. With mail order trees, our guarantee demonstrates how much we believe in their potential, but we agree transparent and fair policies matter. We will certainly pass your suggestion regarding the replacement cost on to the team to consider, as customer peace of mind is important to us.

If you do decide to place a replacement order, feel free to reach out ahead of time so we can guide you on best planting and care practices specific to Atlanta’s climate—like ensuring deep weekly watering initially and protecting roots from transplant shock. Meanwhile, keep an eye on soil moisture levels and consider mulching to help retain humidity around young roots.

Thank you again for giving Nature Hills a chance, and for being such a dedicated gardener. We’re here to support you every step of the way!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sun does the Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree require—full sun or partial shade?

  • Autumn Blooming Cherry performs best in full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering. More sun typically means heavier bloom production in both fall and spring. Plant in a location that receives morning sun for the best flower display.

What are the watering needs for a young Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree after planting?

  • Water deeply 2-3 times per week for the first growing season, providing about 1 inch total weekly moisture. This hardy tree adapts to various soil conditions once established in zones 4-8. Reduce frequency after the first year, then water during dry spells to support those unique fall blooms available at naturehills.com.

How do I prune an Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree without harming the blooms?

  • Prune Autumn Blooming Cherry immediately after spring flowering ends in late April or May. Since this tree blooms on old wood twice yearly (fall and spring), late spring pruning preserves both bloom cycles. Focus on removing dead, crossing, or damaged branches while maintaining the natural rounded shape.

Is the Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree winter hardy in cold climates?

  • The Autumn Blooming Cherry is winter hardy in USDA zones 4-8, tolerating temperatures well below freezing. This Japanese native actually blooms during mild winter periods from October through December, then again in early spring. Plant it in zone 4 or warmer for reliable winter hardiness.

Will the Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree produce edible cherries or just ornamental fruit?

  • The Autumn Blooming Cherry produces small ornamental fruit, not edible cherries suitable for eating. This Prunus subhirtella variety is grown specifically for its spectacular fall and spring blooms rather than fruit production. Focus on enjoying the delicate pink flowers from October through April instead.

How is the Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree shipped—bare root, potted, or balled and burlapped?

  • Autumn Blooming Cherry trees are typically shipped as potted specimens or balled and burlapped, depending on size and season. Container plants can be planted spring through fall in zones 4-8, while B&B trees are usually available for spring planting. Check your specific order for shipping method and plant promptly upon arrival.

How do I mulch around an Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree for best results?

  • Apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch in a 4-foot circle around your Autumn Blooming Cherry, keeping it 6 inches from the trunk. Wood chips or shredded bark work well for this Zone 4-8 tree. Refresh annually in spring before the main bloom flush.

Can I plant the Autumn Blooming Cherry Tree now, or should I wait until spring?

  • Fall planting actually works well for Autumn Blooming Cherry, giving roots time to establish before spring growth. This hardy tree thrives in zones 4-8 and adapts to various soil conditions. Plant 6-8 weeks before your first hard freeze to allow proper root development.

What spacing do I need between Autumn Blooming Cherry Trees considering their mature size?

  • Space Autumn Blooming Cherry trees 25-30 feet apart to accommodate their mature spread of 15-25 feet. This allows each tree room to develop its full graceful canopy without crowding. For property lines, plant at least 12-15 feet from structures or fences.
