Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Blue Star Juniper thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate light afternoon shade in exceptionally hot climates, too much shade causes the plant to lose its signature silvery-blue color and become leggy or sparse.
  • Soil: These evergreens prefer lean, sharply drained soil and will quickly suffer from root rot in soggy conditions. If you have heavy clay, plant them in a raised bed or a slight mound to ensure gravity pulls excess moisture away from the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Blue Star Juniper deeply once or twice a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. Once established, this shrub is remarkably drought tolerant and typically only needs supplemental water during extended dry spells or extreme heat waves. Inconsistent watering or overly wet feet can lead to needle drop and a decline in the plant's structural integrity.

Pruning Tips

This slow growing conifer rarely requires pruning because it naturally maintains its tidy, globe like shape. If you need to remove a stray branch or damaged growth, do so in early spring before the new flush of growth begins. Think of pruning as a light trim rather than a haircut; never cut back into the "dead zone" near the center where there are no green needles, as the plant will not regenerate from old wood.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release evergreen fertilizer once in early spring to support healthy needle development. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer or fall, as this encourages soft new growth that cannot harden off before the first freeze. This tender growth is highly susceptible to winter burn and can damage the overall health of the shrub during the dormant season.
