Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant

Growing Zones 6-9
A type of New Zealand Hair Sedge, the olive-green bases and coppery brown and orange tips of the Cappuccino Sedge Grass (Carex tenuiculmis 'Cappuccino') will have your garden visitors turning heads! An evergreen in warmer climates, these perennial grasses can be showy all year long!
Dramatic fountains that grow up and out, the extremely slender clumps that are super showy and multi-hued with year-round autumn hues that will make your fall decor green with envy! It even looks awesome when the red-orange hues appear in the fall chill and again when covered in frost in the dead of winter!
Hardy throughout hot and humid USDA zones 6 to 9, this Hair Sedge grows 12-15 inches in height and the fountain-like, fine-textured clumps can spread 18-24 inches wide. Deer and rabbits won’t bother with these perennials unless desperate and Sedge have few if any pests and disease issues!
Landscape Application:
Cappuccino Carex is small in stature but makes a big impact. The russet reddish-brown foliage looks great all season. The color adds depth to deep greens and pops beside perennials, and showing off in Rock Gardens. Looking fantastic with orange, yellow, red, and russet plants and shrubs, and especially show off against dark evergreen shrubs!
Cappuccino is a standout in a mixed grass border and makes a huge impression when massed! Updated modern city lots stand out with this unexpected color and container gardens become a breath of fresh air with these chocolatey coppery fine-textured plants as fillers and spillers!
Like all Sedges, Carex Cappuccino is ok with wet feet, so try it next to a pond or in those low wet spots, every garden seems to have. It is a perfect plant to fill those 'over-splash' areas near fountains or downspouts, too.
We first spotted this striking plant a few years ago when Grasses and their brethren started becoming all the rage! It was in what we can only describe as a "chocolate garden". All of the plants were in shades of tawny tans, rich browns, and golden ambers. Who would have thought a garden in shades of brown would look anything other than dead?
But not only was this garden full of life and movement, it was (and we don't use this word lightly) breathtaking! It was remarkably beautiful, and we are thrilled to be able to finally offer this little beauty to you!
- Coppery Brown New Growth Ages Olive Green
- Fine-Textured Blades Turn Coppery Orange All Summer
- Orange-Red Fall Color
- Fountain-Like Clumps
- Great Edging, Containers, Massing & Fantastic Garden Color!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Thriving in full sun and partial shade, you’ll get the most color in 6 hours or more of sun a day. Sedge needs well-drained soil but handles both moderate and high-moisture locations. Just give these grasses a trim in late winter and watch them come back stronger every year!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Soil Locations
- Needs Moderate Moisture & Tolerates Higher Moisture
- Prune Back In Early Spring Before New Growth Emerges
- Deer, Rabbit, Pest & Disease Resistant
