Very pleased with this plant

Plant arrived in great shape. I got container size 2. I dug an appropriate size hole for the plant and loosened the roots before planting. Filled in around the root ball with rich dirt, watered thoroughly. After 3-4 weeks, the plant looks to have taken very well. New growth is coming on fast. I expect this hibiscus will do very well!

Sounds like you gave it a great start, Nathan. Loosening the roots before planting really does make a difference with hardy hibiscus, and rich backfill soil sets them up to push that new growth you are already seeing. These plants tend to come on strong once they settle in, so you should have a lot to look forward to come bloom time. Thanks for sharing how it went.

Plant okay, survived shipment

The plant is as advertised. It does have a developed root system, and since it is a herbaceous perennial it will recover from shipping shock and be okay. But you guys have a lot to learn about shipping plants. You have to secure the pot and rootball inside the box so it can’t move. Either zip tie the pot and rootball to the box or install a bamboo rod the length of the plant/box so it can’t bounce round. See photo to see results of what happens when you don’t.

Very pleased!!

I was a little worried when I got just a plant with stems but they’re coming in nicely! Both are lush and green with lots of stems, I can’t wait for the blooms to come (already have buds on them!!)

UPDATE!! I have blooms!! Big, beautiful flowers!!

Hibiscus can look deceptively bare when they first arrive, so it is great to hear yours bounced back quickly and are already blooming. Those flowers are something else when they open up. Enjoy every bit of it, Elizabeth!

Great experience with Nature Hills

The plant was ground level in the pot when we bought it. Planted it in full sun a few weeks ago and it's already a foot tall with beautiful bushy leaves. This is growing so fast! We can't wait till it blooms.

Midnight Marvel really does take off once it settles in, and a foot of growth in just a few weeks is a great sign it loves its spot. Those big, deep-green leaves are half the show before the blooms even arrive. The flowers are worth the wait, rich crimson and dinner-plate sized. Thanks for sharing the update!

Nature Hills Nursery is the BEST

Nature Hills is now the only mail order nursery I use for trees and shrubs.
Not only do they offer quality products, their packaging is beyond compare. Plants are securely wrapped, no loss is soil in transit. They also offer plants I cannot find anywhere else, even at my local nurseries.

Packaging is something we put real thought into, so it means a lot to hear it holds up all the way to your door. The Midnight Marvel is a great choice, and it tends to reward a little patience in spring since hardy hibiscus can be slow to wake up. Thanks for making us your go-to, Christine. Happy growing!

Plant came healthy and it’s growing

Plant came healthy and it’s growing fast

Midnight Marvel is known for putting on serious size once it settles in, so fast growth is a great sign it arrived in good shape. Give it a little extra water during any hot spells this summer and you should see those big burgundy blooms before long. Thanks for sharing the update, John.

These are truly amazing Hibiscus 🌺

The plants arrived healthy and strong I planted them and so far they are growing and doing great. I was concerned because I ordered so late and was not sure they would survive. They are growing and thriving!!

Late-season planting can feel like a gamble, so it is great to hear these settled in and kept growing. Hardy Hibiscus are surprisingly resilient once their roots get established, and they tend to come back with even more vigor the following year. Thanks for giving them a chance despite the timing.

This is my Second!

I already have one that just started blooming. Hopefully the new one will progress as healthy as the other one. Beautiful plant!

Having one already in bloom is a good sign for the new one. Midnight Marvel tends to establish quickly once it settles in, so with a healthy sibling already going strong in your garden, you know just what this one needs. Thanks for coming back for a second, Jean.

Positive Experience

This was our first go at ordering a plant and having it shipped. The Hibiscus arrived well-packaged and appeared to be healthy. We planted it immediately and it has really thrived! We were pleasantly surprised with the whole process and the results and would highly recommend!

Midnight Marvel is a great first ship-to-home plant. It handles transit reasonably well, and it sounds like yours hit the ground running once you got it in the soil. Thanks for giving it a shot and for sharing how it turned out. That full, dark foliage with the crimson blooms is something to look forward to each summer.

Very healthy—looking forward to blooms

Very healthy—looking forward to future blooms!

Midnight Marvel is worth the wait. Once it settles in and the weather warms, those deep burgundy blooms can get impressively large, so you have something good to look forward to. Thanks for sharing your update, and feel free to check back in when it flowers!

I received a very healthy plant that was well packaged

I received a very healthy plant that was well packaged. It’s almost doubled in size every week since it arrived. Can’t wait to see this thing in full bloom!

Midnight Marvel is a fast grower once it settles in, so that doubling-up growth is a great sign it's happy in its new spot. The blooms are worth the wait, those deep crimson flowers against the dark foliage are quite a sight. Thanks for letting us know it arrived in good shape, Heath.

I’m surprised by how fast it’s growing

I’m surprised by how fast it’s growing.

Hardy hibiscus can really take off once they settle in, so it is exciting to see yours hitting its stride so quickly. Midnight Marvel tends to put on a lot of growth once the roots establish, and the deep burgundy foliage only gets more dramatic as the season goes on. Enjoy the show!

As you are aware the hibiscus doesn't even start growing in my region until June so why are you

As you are aware the hibiscus doesn't even start growing in my region until June so why are you asking me how it is growing. That is like asking a nun how her mustache is coming in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall and wide does Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus grow at maturity?

  • Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus reaches 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. This vigorous perennial forms a lush, mounded shape that makes an excellent focal point. Plant it where you have plenty of space to showcase its dramatic size and stunning 9-inch blooms.

What type of soil does Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus prefer?

  • Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus thrives in moist, well-draining soil and tolerates clay conditions better than most perennials. This native Rose Mallow adaptation prefers consistent moisture but avoid waterlogged conditions. Plant in fertile soil amended with compost for best results, available at naturehills.com.

How often should I water my newly planted Midnight Marvel hibiscus?

  • Water newly planted Midnight Marvel deeply 2-3 times per week for the first month. These hardy hibiscus need consistent moisture to establish their vigorous root system before their late-summer bloom show. Check soil moisture 2 inches deep and water when dry.

Is Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus a fast-growing or slow-growing plant?

  • Midnight Marvel has a fast growth rate once it gets established in late spring. While it's one of the last perennials to emerge each season, it quickly catches up to other plants once active growth begins. Be patient in spring and you'll be rewarded with rapid development through summer.

When does Midnight Marvel hibiscus bloom and what color are the flowers?

  • Midnight Marvel blooms in late summer with stunning 9-inch carmine-red flowers that continue until frost. The dramatic black buds open into dinner-plate-sized blooms with overlapping spiral petals. Shop at Nature Hills for this showstopping late-season performer.

Is Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus deer resistant?

  • Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus is not typically deer resistant, as deer often browse hibiscus foliage and flowers. The large 9-inch blooms and lush purple foliage can be particularly attractive to deer. Consider fencing or deer repellent if deer pressure is high in your area.
