Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This shrub thrives in at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure strong stems and maximum flower production. While it can tolerate light afternoon shade, less sun often leads to leggy growth and fewer of those signature white and red blooms.
  • Soil: It prefers rich, well-drained soil but is surprisingly adaptable to various types. For heavy clay that stays wet, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During its first year, water your Lil' Kim® deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this Rose of Sharon is quite drought-tolerant, though providing supplemental water during heat waves prevents the flower buds from dropping prematurely. Inconsistent watering during the peak of summer usually results in smaller blooms and yellowing interior leaves.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before new growth appears. Think of it like a spring haircut; removing about a third of the height helps the plant maintain its compact, rounded shape and encourages more flowering branches. This timing ensures you don't accidentally cut off the season's flower buds, which only form on the fresh stems that emerge in spring.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the new leaves begin to unfurl to fuel the summer show. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This late-season growth is often easily damaged by freezing temperatures, which can stress the entire plant.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This hard-working dwarf Rose of Sharon likes well-drained soils but tolerates many different soil types. It is well adapted to both extreme heat and high humidity. Lil' Kim® will also tolerate urban environments. Select a location with full sun exposure for the best flower display. Though tolerant of periods of drought, this plant will benefit greatly from a 3 to 4-inch layer of arborist mulch spread to 3 feet outside of the canopy. This will help keep the root system cool in the summer and extend the period between watering. Make sure to water regularly in containers. Feed with organic slow-release fertilizer twice a year in the late winter and mid-summer to keep plants growing and blooming well. This will ensure a proliferation of large flowers beginning in the late spring.

For best results in a container, make sure your pot has plenty of drain holes in the bottom. Provide a good enriched and well-drained potting soil such as Dr. Earth Organic and Natural Planting Mix for the healthiest patio container plants.

For the largest flowers prune back your Lil' Kim® Althea in the late winter to 2 to 3 buds per stem. Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

In some areas of the country, Hibiscus syriacus varieties are considered invasive, although Lil' Kim® produces far fewer seeds! Nature Hills uses an online service called Plant Sentry™ to alert you if there are any local regulations. Your local Agricultural Extension Service is also a valuable resource on the best plant selections for your area. To avoid any seedlings, simply deadhead your shrub lightly right after bloom to remove these seedpods. But don’t cut back your stems, or you'll risk cutting off next year's flowers!

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
