Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This vine performs best with at least six hours of direct sun to produce the most vibrant blue flowers. It is important to keep the base of the plant shaded by low growing perennials or mulch to keep the roots cool while the top grows in the light.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that drains slowly, mix in compost to improve the structure and prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

Newly planted Sacha Clematis needs deep watering two or three times a week to help the roots get settled. For mature plants, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung out sponge during the hot summer months. Inconsistent watering often leads to smaller blooms and yellowing leaves as the plant struggles with heat stress.

Pruning Tips

This variety is a Group 3 clematis, which means it produces all of its flowers on new wood grown in the current year. In late winter or early spring, give the vine a hard haircut by cutting all stems back to about 12 inches above the ground. This clears out the old growth and encourages the plant to send up a fresh, dense pillar of deep blue flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new green shoots emerge from the soil. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers after mid summer. Extra nitrogen late in the season forces the plant to focus on foliage growth instead of flower production, which can cut your blooming season short.
