Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hibiscus thrives in full sun and needs at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily to produce those massive blooms. If you plant it in partial shade, the stems may become leggy and flower production will drop significantly.
  • Soil: These plants love rich, moisture-retentive soil and can even tolerate wet spots where other plants struggle. If you have sandy soil that drains too quickly, amend it heavily with compost or peat moss to help hold the moisture this plant craves.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist while your new plant establishes its root system, as these are naturally thirsty plants that dislike drying out. Once established, they still require regular watering to support their lush foliage and large flowers; inconsistent moisture often leads to dropped flower buds or yellowing leaves.

Pruning Tips

Since this is a hardy perennial Hibiscus, it blooms on new wood and typically dies back to the ground in cold climates. Cut all the old stems down to about 3 to 6 inches above the soil line in early spring before new growth emerges. Be patient, as this plant is notoriously late to break dormancy and may not show green growth until late May or early June.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer in spring once you see new green shoots poking through the soil. Avoid feeding after mid-summer, as late boosts of nitrogen can push soft new growth that won't harden off in time for the first frost.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy Hibiscus grows well in full sun, but in hot climates appreciates some afternoon/partial shade. These plants thrive in any fertile, well-drained soil with ample moisture. Do not allow your plants to dry to the wilting point. But be careful to not over-water until plants show signs of growth!

Be patient because Hibiscus can be slow to emerge in spring, sometimes the last to show up before summer. However, their fast growth more than makes up for it! Ready to bloom in just a few weeks from when the first shoots emerge from the ground. Deadhead the seedheads after the flowers have faded for a neater appearance, then in the late autumn, after the leaves and stems have died, trimming them down to an inch or so above the ground.

These low-maintenance shrubs are high on the deer-resistant list of plants, so go ahead and plant Hardy HIbiscus without worry!

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Widely Adaptable to Soil & Climate
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Prune Off Dead Shoots in Late Autumn
  • Deer Resistant
