Looking for an exquisite smaller shrub for the home landscape that stays compact and colorful all season long? You’ll adore the dwarf selection of Tiny Wine® Ninebark (Tiny Wine® Physocarpus opulifolius 'SMPOTW'PP26,749).

In springtime, dainty pink flower buds open to round white flower clusters. the blooms are amazingly showy against the intensely colorful leaves. The stems are a deep russet-brown, and the new foliage is a deep bronzy-maroon as it first emerges. As the summer wears on, the foliage matures into a rich burgundy-maroon.

Following the flower display, showy fleshy seed capsules develop that are also borne in clusters. The seed capsules start out purple and mature to a very colorful red. Tiny Wine® provides a wonderful showy display from spring through fall without taking up much room.

Perfectly formed, Tiny Wine® stays dense to the ground and never gets leggy. It is a magnificent selection for smaller lots and in large containers on the patio, too.

Even in winter, you’ll be enchanted once those beautiful leaves have dropped for the winter. Just like other larger Ninebarks, the stems of Tiny Wine® develop a striking peeling appearance. Use these exfoliating deciduous shrubs to bring visual interest to your winter garden.

You’ll appreciate their fast growth rate, even as a smaller plant. These beautiful shrubs are easy to care for.

Use all parts of Tiny Wine® in your cut flower arrangements. Add cut foliage stems to the beautiful flowers for a gorgeous bouquet in a jiffy. In fall, include the seed capsules as excellent cut branches for your flower arrangements.

How to Use Tiny Wine® Ninebark in the Landscape

The leaves have the best color in sunny locations, so plant it in full sun where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Because of their smaller size, Tiny Wine® very versatile and can be used in many landscape applications. Use them in your sunny foundation plantings to add color all season long.

We recommend that you allow them to grow into its natural, upright form. No need to shear them into submission.

Create fantastic dense hedges that define spaces in your landscape. For a solid screen that stays dense all the way to the ground, plant multiple shrubs 2 ½ feet on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

Use in a patio planting as a perfect backdrop for your favorite spring-flowering bulbs and annuals. Or, repeat regularly along the length of your perennial border. It stays small enough to face larger shrubs and acts as a brilliantly bold accent.

Tiny Wine® becomes the “Thriller” in large containers. Pair with contrasting gold-toned plants as filler and chartreuse spilling vines near the edges. Or, keep the overall look cool-toned with blue flowering filler and variegated ivory spillers.

No need to worry about overwintering this incredibly cold-hardy plant. In ground, or in containers, Tiny Wine® is a rugged little variety that can withstand near Arctic winter temperatures of Zone 3.

#ProPlantTips for Care

There are few shrubs that are easier to grow than Ninebark. This native American shrub adapts to most conditions you can throw at it without batting an eye. Disease resistant, pest resistant and not bothered by woodland critters, it's hard to find a friendlier shrub for the home gardener.

Tiny Wine® is a wonderful selection of Ninebark that grows well in any soil. It even tolerates clay soils and those that are occasionally stay wet for short periods of time.

Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. This is especially important during the first growing season as the roots work to get established in your native soil. Check the first few inches of soil using your finger. Is it getting dry? Time to water. Still moist? Skip watering that day.

The flowers are borne on last year’s stems, or “old wood.” Before pruning, allow the spring flowers to bloom and fade fully. Better to do renewal pruning on this shrub than clip along the top to control the size.

Every three years or so, remove the thickest, oldest stems at ground level. You’ll be leaving the thinner, younger stems in place for best flowering. This invigorates your Tiny Wine® for the best performance.

Tiny Wine® Ninebark from Proven Winners® is a wonderfully carefree shrub for your landscape. You’ll find plenty of places to tuck them into your design. Order today from the expert growers at Nature Hills Nursery.

Deer love it

My plants were healthy but they were getting smaller instead of bigger! The deer absolutely love them and the deer spray isn’t all that effective. They will have to go in my fenced backyard.

Hi Joan,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your plants! We’re glad to hear they arrived healthy, though we’re sorry to learn that hungry deer have been enjoying them a bit too much and affecting their growth. Deer love nibbling on certain plants, and even the best sprays can sometimes be less effective than we hope.

Placing your plants in a fenced backyard sounds like a solid plan to protect them. Additionally, you might consider using motion-activated sprinklers or adding natural deer repellents such as garlic or hot pepper sprays around your plants to further discourage browsing. Many gardeners find combining physical barriers with these tactics helps keep deer at bay.

If you’d like, we’re happy to recommend more deer-resistant varieties or share tips tailored to your specific plants and region—just let us know!

Dear Diane,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your new shrub! We're delighted to hear that you’re pleased with its compact size so far. Indeed, many shrubs take a bit of time to settle in before they burst into bloom, so your excitement for next year’s flowers is well-founded. To help ensure vibrant blooms, be sure to check your plant’s specific sun and soil requirements, and feel free to water consistently during establishment periods. If you ever have questions about ongoing care or need tips on boosting bloom potential, we’re always here to assist.
