Cutting back?

I love my Autumn Joy all summer, but by fall when it should look its best, its falling over to the point where its laying all the ground because its become so tall. When and how much should it be cut back so it looks good in the fall? Answer from Nature Hills: Autumn Joy likes hot and dry and it sounds like you need to split your plant at least by four times.

Hi Phyllis,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Autumn Joy Sedum! It’s wonderful to hear how much you love it during the summer months. Sedums like Autumn Joy can indeed grow quite tall and top-heavy by fall, which is why they sometimes flop over.

To help your plant maintain a more upright and tidy appearance, we recommend cutting it back by about one-third to one-half in early spring before new growth starts. This pruning encourages sturdy stems that are less likely to fall over and can also promote bushier growth and better blooms. Another helpful tip is dividing your sedum every few years—it allows the plant to stay healthy and robust, as crowded roots can also lead to floppiness.

If staking is convenient for you, temporarily supporting taller stems during flowering can also help keep things looking their best. You might find this gardening guide on {{plant care site or NatureHills care page}} useful for more detailed seasonal care.

We’re here if you have any other questions about your garden and hope your Autumn Joy will continue to bring you joy all season long!

Do sedum need to be taken out of the ground when cleaning up the beds for the winter or should I leave them to dry off them selves? Answer from Nature Hills: Sedum is a plant that gives good winter interest, do not cut back until late winter or early spring.

Hello Jeanne,

Thank you so much for reaching out with your question about your Autumn Joy Sedum! We're glad to hear you’re giving your garden such thoughtful care. You’re absolutely right—Sedum is an excellent plant for adding winter interest. During the colder months, it’s best to leave the plants standing in your bed to allow the natural structure and dried flower heads to quietly brighten the winter landscape.

When you’re ready to clean up—typically in late winter or early spring—trim back the dead stems to encourage fresh, healthy growth when warmer weather arrives. This approach also protects the root system during winter, so there’s no need to dig them up. For added support, applying a thin layer of mulch around the base can help insulate the roots through those colder months.

If you’d like, we have some great care guides on our website about seasonal plant maintenance that you may find helpful as you plan your garden tasks.

Autumn Joy

The Autumn Joy Sedum is amazing. Loves hot and dry which works in my zone, and it's easily split so I have added it to multiple places in my yard and shared it with friends.

Hi Josie,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Autumn Joy Sedum! We’re thrilled to hear that it’s thriving beautifully in your hot, dry climate and that it’s doubled as the perfect gift for your friends. Splitting sedum is such a great way to expand your garden and spread joy—your yard must look marvelous.

If you’re ever looking for tips on how to keep your sedum flourishing year-round, one handy trick is to prune the flower heads after blooming to maintain the plant’s tidy shape and encourage fall reblooming. Also, minimal watering is usually best for sedums since they prefer well-drained soil—and from your feedback, it sounds like you’ve got the perfect setup!

Thanks again for taking the time to share. We’re always here if you want advice on your next garden additions or care tips.

When and how much should it be cut back so it looks good in the fall? Answer from Nature Hills: Autumn Joy likes hot and dry and it sounds like you need to split your plant at least by four times.

Hi Phyllis,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and for sharing your Autumn Joy Sedum experience with us! It’s wonderful to hear how much you enjoy your plant throughout the summer.

Regarding your concern about the plant becoming tall and flopping over by fall, this is actually quite common with Autumn Joy Sedum when stems get leggy. A good way to keep your plant looking its best is to prune it back in early summer after it finishes its initial bloom. You can trim the stems by about one-third to one-half, which encourages stronger, more compact growth and prevents flopping later in the season.

Another great tip is to divide your clump every 3 to 4 years, which revitalizes the plant and helps with sturdier stems—something you might consider if it’s become very large.

If you’d like, we have a helpful care guide online for Autumn Joy Sedum with pruning and care tips that you may find useful going forward.

Hi Jeanne,

Thank you so much for reaching out with your question about your Autumn Joy Sedum! You’re right to consider how best to care for it come winter. Sedum is indeed a resilient plant that provides lovely winter interest with its dried blooms and sturdy foliage. It’s best to leave the plant standing through the winter months to protect it and allow it to catch snow for insulation. You should wait until late winter or early spring to cut it back—simply trim back the dead stems to make room for the fresh new growth.

If you’re interested, mulching around the base before winter can help protect the roots during particularly harsh freezes. Also, ensuring good drainage will keep your sedum happy and healthy season after season.

Thanks again for your thoughtful question, Jeanne—please reach out anytime if you need more tips!

Frequently Asked Questions

How large does Autumn Joy Sedum get at maturity?

  • Autumn Joy Sedum typically reaches 18-24 inches tall and wide at maturity, forming neat rounded clumps. This hardy succulent maintains its compact, formal shape throughout the growing season in zones 3-9. Space plants 18-24 inches apart for best results.

Does Autumn Joy Sedum tolerate drought well?

  • Autumn Joy Sedum thrives in drought conditions throughout USDA zones 3-9. This hardy succulent earned the common name "Stonecrop" for good reason - it handles sun, drought, and heat with ease. Shop at Nature Hills for this reliable, low-maintenance perennial.

Will Autumn Joy Sedum grow well in my planting zone (e.g., zone 5 or 9)?

  • Autumn Joy Sedum thrives in USDA zones 3-9, making it suitable for nearly all North American gardens. This hardy succulent handles extreme cold and heat with ease. Plant it in full sun with well-draining soil for best results.

Does Autumn Joy Sedum need fertilizer, and how much?

  • Autumn Joy Sedum rarely needs fertilizer due to its hardy, drought-tolerant nature as a succulent perennial. In fact, too much fertilizer can cause the stems to become floppy and reduce flowering. If your soil is extremely poor, apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer in early spring when shoots first emerge.

When will my Autumn Joy Sedum order ship, based on my zone?

  • Autumn Joy Sedum ships year-round to zones 3-9, with spring being optimal for establishment. This hardy succulent tolerates extreme temperatures and adapts quickly to new locations. Check your specific zone's shipping schedule at naturehills.com for precise timing.
