Where to Plant

Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun daily, though 8 or more hours produces the best flowering. Plants grown in too much shade become leggy with sparse blooms and increased disease problems.

Soil: Adapts to most soil types from sandy to clay as long as drainage is good. Amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage. Butterfly bush will not tolerate wet feet and is highly susceptible to root rot in soggy conditions. For containers, use quality potting mix with perlite and ensure drainage holes.

Watering Requirements

Water every 2-3 days for the first two weeks after planting, then transition to deep weekly watering through the first growing season. Once established in year two, these plants are moderately drought tolerant and only need supplemental water every 7-14 days during dry spells. Container plants dry out faster and need watering when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry.

Pruning Tips

BUZZ™ Butterfly Bush blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter to early spring before new growth emerges. Cut all stems back to 6-12 inches from the ground. Throughout summer, deadhead spent flower clusters by snipping back to the next set of leaves to encourage continuous reblooming. Leave stems standing through winter for protection in colder zones.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) once in early spring, or simply top-dress with 2-3 inches of compost around the base. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as they promote foliage at the expense of flowers. Stop fertilizing after August to prevent tender new growth before frost.

In colder growing zones, this herbaceious perennial shrub will die back to the ground in winter. If they are in containers in a cold zone, plan to move the containers to an unheated, protected area, such as a garage or shed for winter.

Simply clip off any spent flower spires to encourage repeat blooming and to keep things tidy. Cut them back to ground level in early spring, and thrill at the sight of new spring growth. It will grow quickly back to its mature size in a single season.
