Austrian Pines Purchased in 2018

I just wanted to let you know that in October 2018, I purchased 2 Austrian Pine Trees in #2 Containers from you. I wasn't sure at all how they would do but WOW, they really took off and are beautiful. They get full sun along a road - I watered the first 5 years during drought and dry spells and fertilized but nothing more. I am really enjoying them. I live in Southern Indiana.

Hi Mary, Thank you so much for your glowing review! We love to see photos of our trees growing & glowing, thank you for sharing - and how gorgeous those Austrian Pines look - well done! Thank you - Nature Hills Customer Support

Beautiful Evergreens for the entire year🌲🌲

I love these trees!!! They are settling in very nicely. Would love to purchase more in the future. I’m thinking that these trees will offer a very nice barrier for for the view of a town garage with several outbuildings. We enjoy our backyard and have a beautiful pond !!! Evergreens are so pleasing to the eye in the winter months and year round.

Austrian Pines are one of the better choices for a privacy screen, and it sounds like yours are off to a solid start. Once they settle in and put on a few years of growth, they will do a real job of blocking that view of the garage. The pond backdrop sounds like a great setting for them. Thanks for sharing, Lynne, and we hope they give you exactly the screen you are picturing. The Nature Hills Team

Very nice trees

Very nice trees. growing fine so far, after around 3 weeks.

Three weeks in and already growing well. that is a good sign with Austrian Pine. They tend to settle in quickly once their roots get comfortable in native soil. Thanks for the update, Jim, and enjoy watching it fill out over the seasons.

Austrian Pine

Ordered a #2 container. Took awhile to get the tree due to region requirements once it arrived it was beautiful. My husband planted it right away giving it plenty of nutrients and water. So far it’s still green and looks healthy. Praying it stays that way and will grow tall. We had planted 11 white pines and lost three which were about 15 Ft high. So our new tree has a long way to go to reach 15-20 feet. Good that this tree grows fast.

Hello Sharon,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Austrian Pine and for your detailed, thoughtful review! We completely understand how important it is to find hardy, fast-growing trees that will thrive and bring lasting beauty to your landscape, especially after the sadness of losing some white pines. We’re glad to hear your new tree arrived safely and looks healthy—that’s a great start!

Planting with the right nutrients and regular watering is definitely key, and it sounds like your husband’s care is giving it the best possible foundation. Since Austrian Pines can be susceptible to occasional pests or needle cast diseases, be sure to keep an eye out for any unusual spotting or discoloration. If any concerns pop up, we’re here to help troubleshoot or recommend treatments. Patience and care will certainly reward you as your tree matures into that tall, elegant addition you envision.

Thank you again for choosing Nature Hills—and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions along the way. We’re cheering on your new Austrian Pine as it grows strong!

Love the privacy aspect

Love the austrian pine for its thick, full branching & classic shape. I learned that if you trim the leader, it will grow out faster & fuller.

Your tip about trimming the leader to encourage faster, fuller growth is a great insight and incredibly helpful for others looking to nurture their pines.

If you’re interested, you might find it helpful to prune in late winter or early spring before the new growth starts, as this can promote healthier spreading. Frequently Asked Questions

How much are pine trees?

  • Austrian Pine prices vary by size, typically ranging from $30-200+ depending on height and maturity. These fast-growing evergreens add 3+ feet annually when young, reaching 40-50 feet tall in zones 3-8. Invest in smaller sizes for budget-friendly landscaping since they establish quickly.

How big does an Austrian Pine tree get at maturity?

  • Austrian Pine trees reach 40-50 feet tall with a 25-35 foot spread at maturity. They start with a pyramidal shape when young, then develop a more rounded, flat-topped form as they age. Plan for plenty of space when planting these substantial evergreens available at naturehills.com.

How far apart should I plant Austrian Pine trees?

  • Plant Austrian Pines 20-30 feet apart for proper mature spacing. These trees reach 25-35 feet wide at maturity, so adequate spacing prevents overcrowding and ensures healthy air circulation. For windbreaks or privacy screens, you can plant closer at 15-20 feet apart.

What soil types does Austrian Pine tolerate, like clay or poor soil?

  • Austrian Pines are remarkably adaptable to poor soils, including clay, sandy, and compacted urban conditions. Their tolerance for challenging soil types, combined with salt and drought resistance, makes them excellent choices for difficult planting sites. They thrive in Zones 3-8 across various soil conditions that would stress other evergreens.

Does Austrian Pine require full sun, and how many hours?

  • Austrian Pine thrives in full sun, needing at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and density. This hardy evergreen tolerates various conditions but develops its characteristic thick, pyramidal shape best in full sun exposure. For best results in zones 3-8, plant in an open location with maximum sunlight available at naturehills.com.

How much water does Austrian Pine need after planting, and is it drought-tolerant?

  • Austrian Pines are notably drought-tolerant once established and can withstand dry conditions. Water regularly the first year after planting to establish strong roots, then reduce frequency as these hardy evergreens become quite self-sufficient. Their salt tolerance and ability to thrive in urban environments demonstrates their resilience to various stressors.

When and how should I prune an Austrian Pine tree?

  • Austrian Pines rarely need pruning due to their naturally attractive pyramidal shape when young. If needed, prune in late winter before spring growth begins to avoid disrupting the tree's natural form. Only remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain the strong branching structure that makes these evergreens so effective as windbreaks and privacy screens.

What are the shipping times and seasons for Austrian Pine trees?

  • Austrian Pines ship during optimal planting seasons in spring and fall when trees are dormant. These hardy evergreens (Zones 3-8) establish best when planted before extreme summer heat or winter freezing. Order early in your preferred season for best availability and timing.

Will my Austrian Pine order ship in winter, or only spring/fall?

  • Austrian Pines ship during their dormant season from late fall through early spring when temperatures are cool. These hardy evergreens (zones 3-8) handle cold shipping conditions well and establish better when planted during dormancy. Check your local frost dates and plan to plant before spring growth begins.
