Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Xeric and Alpine gardens rejoice! The Avalanche Mountain Sandwort (Arenaria montana 'Avalanche') has darling little pure white blossoms! These five-petalled beauties cheerfully smother the tops of these low-growing mounding plants and seem to float atop a sea of silvery gray-green foliage.
Don't let the silky petals and fine-textured foliage fool you, these perennial flowering ornamentals are tough! From late spring until early summer these xeric plants bloom with pure white blossoms and attract loads of pollinators.
Avalanche loves drier cooler weather and conditions, brightening any rocky area and tough location with its long-lasting bloom and silvery foliage.
Planting and Application:
Mountain Sandwort loves rocky, sandy and dry soil. Once established it is very drought tolerant and Xeric, so don't be afraid to tuck it on top of retaining walls, high hillsides and dangerous slopes. Use along hot sunny walkways and paths, around sunbaked landscape features and as edging along that side of your home's foundation.
Perfect in Alpine garden beds and rock gardens, these are ideal for that hell-strip along the road and sidewalk. The smaller size and low growth make Sandworts ideal for sunny porch and patio containers and planters! Once established, they require very little water and maintenance and act as a beautiful spiller, even when not in bloom!
- Darling Pure White Blossoms
- Bee & Butterfly Friendly
- Fine-Textured Gray-Green Foliage
- Low-Growing & Mat-Forming
- Rock & Alpine Gardens, Xeriscaping, Groundcover
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Sandworts love full sun and won't really settle for anything less. They also need excellent drainage, so any drier, rocky or sandy location will suit them perfectly. Average garden beds and soil will work too, but just be sure you have very well-drained soil on the drier side. Slower growing just means less maintenance from you!
- Full Sun
- Any Well-Drained Soil & Low Water Needs Once Established
- Deer Resistant
- Prune/Clean Mound Late Winter
- Cold Hardy USDA Zones 4-8
