The Arbequina flowers early on, with petite creamy white blooms that are nearly hidden by the tree's dark green leaves, but your pollinators will find them in swarms! The First in Class Olive

It took some time for the Arbequina Olive to become a world-renowned olive from its obscure beginnings in a small village of Arbeca, in the region of the Les Garrigues in Spanish Catalonia.

Olive are native to the Mediterranean coast, where they grow wild. As far back as 61,000 years ago evidence of the modern-day olive (Olea europea) has been discovered being used as firewood. Although, some reports from Israel have possible evidence from as far back as 1 million years, with cultivation beginning around 7100-6300 BC.

The Arbequina, though known and appreciated, stayed primarily grown in Catalonia, Aragon and Andalusia Spain for hundreds of years until it was introduced to Europe by the Duke of Medinaceli in the 17th century.

Gradually, its low vigor (meaning less pruning), high productivity, wide range of adaptability and fine quality oil, got noticed by other olive growing regions of the world. By the turn of the 20th century, olive growing regions like California, Argentina, Chile and Australia were all growing the Arbequina Olive.

The practice of high and super high-density planting and pruning of olives came into fashion in the mid-1980's. Plantings went from the standard 100 - 340 trees to the acre to 250 - 840 trees to the acre. Then in 1994, Mr. Jose M Ferrer of the Valonga Plantation in Binefar in Huesca, Aragon Spain; on the advice of his tree supplier, Agromillora Nursery of Catalonia Spain, planted the first super high-density planting. This consisted of trees being planted 670 - 1210 trees per acre.

Along with this, Agromillora Nursery also recommended a group of highly productive, high quality, upright, almost columnar growing varieties. These varieties were the Arbequina, the Arbosana and the Koroneki.

Because of the high rate of return on the farmers initial investment and the popularity surge in the demand for olive oil, the high and super high-density systems became the preferred systems. The result was the Arbeguina Olive, with its super high-quality oil, became one of the most widely planted olives in the world.

At the same time the home garden nursery industry saw the same attributes being a perfect match for the home-grown olive. The Arbequina has become the #1 home garden variety grown today.
