No need to order online plants from anywhere else. These folks know how to ship healthy plants!

I received this plant yesterday and planted it this morning. Arrived healthy and the condition is marvelous!

Blue False Indigo is a tough, rewarding perennial once it gets settled in, and it sounds like yours is off to a great start. One tip: give it a season or two to establish before it really hits its stride, but when it blooms, it puts on a show worth waiting for. Thanks for the kind words, Elizabeth, and happy gardening!

The plants were larger than I expected

The plants were larger than I expected, were in great physical condition (packaging was excellent), and healthy. I had them in pots for a few weeks in semi shade and then moved them to full sun. They are growing gangbusters! Very excited about the high quality of the plants I received.

Blue False Indigo is a tough, rewarding plant once it settles in, and it sounds like yours are off to a strong start. The transition from semi-shade to full sun is a smart way to let them acclimate before giving them the conditions they really thrive in. Thanks for the kind words about the packaging too, Paul. We hope you enjoy the blooms for many seasons to come.

nice healthy plant

nice healthy plant, settling in for first year. we'll see how it does next year.

Blue False Indigo does take a season to get comfortable, so your patience will pay off. Once it establishes that deep root system, it tends to put on a much better show in year two and beyond, often with those striking blue-purple spikes that make it worth the wait. Thanks for the update, Mike, and feel free to check back in next season.

Plant came in great condition and is growing well. Thanks.

Blue False Indigo is a tough, long-lived plant once it gets settled in, so it is great to hear yours hit the ground running. Thanks for the update, Robin. As a heads-up, the root system really deepens in years two and three, so you should see even more vigorous growth and blooms ahead.

Blue False Indigo ships surprisingly well for a plant with such delicate foliage, so it's great to hear yours arrived in good shape. The plant arrived with a bent stem

The plant arrived with a bent stem. It is alive because I split a straw to support it and placed a plastic fork beside it for support. I hope it survives.

I love it...

This is my third year and I really have enjoyed it. The flowers last for a long time, and even with they are replaced with seed pods, it is still attractive. I just harvested this years seeds, just over a cup full for my girlfriends to start their own plant. My daughter and granddaughter started theirs last year - They say the plant was up over a foot - not bad for their first year!BTW, my plant is over 3 ft high and over 5' wide. Best money I ever spent!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How large does Blue False Indigo get at maturity?

  • Blue False Indigo reaches 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity, forming a rounded, bushy perennial. This long-lived native is hardy in zones 3-9 and returns stronger each spring after dying back in winter. Allow adequate spacing since established plants develop into substantial clumps over time.

Does Blue False Indigo tolerate clay soil or need amendments?

  • Blue False Indigo thrives in clay soil without amendments, thanks to its tough native prairie roots. This adaptable perennial actually prefers poor soils and will establish well in challenging sites. Shop at Nature Hills for this hardy zones 3-9 native.

What are the watering and moisture needs for Blue False Indigo after establishment?

  • Blue False Indigo is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in dry conditions. This hardy native actually prefers less water and can handle poor soils better than rich, moist conditions. Water regularly the first year, then back off to occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.

How do I care for Blue False Indigo to prevent flopping or leaning over?

  • Blue False Indigo's sturdy 3-4 foot structure rarely needs support when grown in full sun with good drainage. The plant naturally develops a strong, bushy form that holds up well to wind and weather. Avoid overwatering and rich soils, which can cause weak, floppy growth in this hardy native.

Is Blue False Indigo deer and rabbit resistant, especially for young plants?

  • Blue False Indigo is generally deer and rabbit resistant due to its bitter compounds, though young plants may need protection their first season. Once this hardy perennial establishes its 3-4 foot form, browsing becomes rare. Shop at Nature Hills for this native beauty.

What pests or diseases affect Blue False Indigo, like powdery mildew or weevils?

  • Blue False Indigo is remarkably pest and disease resistant, with few serious issues affecting this hardy native perennial. Occasional aphids may appear on new growth, and root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent problems.

What maintenance does Blue False Indigo require, like pruning or fertilizing?

  • Blue False Indigo requires minimal maintenance once established. This hardy perennial needs no fertilizing since its nitrogen-fixing roots actually improve soil health. Simply cut back the dried stems in late winter before new growth emerges in spring.

How is Blue False Indigo shipped—bare root, potted, or something else—and what size should I expect?

  • Blue False Indigo typically ships as a potted perennial plant, ready to establish in your garden. Since it grows 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity, expect a smaller starter plant that will reach full size over 2-3 seasons. Plant in spring after frost danger passes for best establishment.
