Was a bit concerned as it took a while to ship however

Was a bit concerned as it took a while to ship however, the rose bush was super healthy, had a great root ball. And it's taking really well in it's new planting area.

Shipping wait times can definitely test your patience, so it's good to know the plant arrived in solid shape and is settling in well. Zephirine Drouhin tends to put energy into establishing roots before it puts on a big show above ground, so you're off to a great start. Thanks for sticking with us through the wait.

Trustworthy Company

I was very pleased with the delivery and condition of my climbing rose. I am eager to see the fragrant blooms to appear.

Zephirine Drouhin is such a rewarding rose to look forward to, Rebecca. The fragrance is genuinely one of its best qualities, and as a thornless climber it is easy to work with as it gets established. Give it a sunny spot with good air circulation and it should put on a nice show for you. Thanks for the kind words and for choosing us.

It’s growing very well

It’s growing very well, very healthy, but has no buds or roses. When can I expect them?

Zephirine Drouhin is a vigorous grower, so it sounds like yours is off to a good start. First-season plants often put most of their energy into establishing roots and canes before flowering, so it is common to see a flush of blooms arrive in the second year once the plant is more settled in. If you are heading into your second season and still seeing no buds, feel free to reach out to our support team and they can help troubleshoot things like light levels and pruning timing. Thanks for the update, Ellen.

Healthy, Vigorous Zephirine Drouhin Rose—Thriving After Planting from Nature Hills Nursery

I was initially wary about ordering plants online, but to my surprise, both of my Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose arrived in excellent condition. It was a sizable, healthy plant on arrival, and it has shown very little transplant shock during establishment. So far, it is doing great and has started growing vigorously—almost ready for a trellis. I’m very pleased with this purchase and would not hesitate to order from Nature Hills Nursery again.

Zephirine Drouhin is such a rewarding climber, and it sounds like yours hit the ground running. Minimal transplant shock and vigorous new growth this early on are great signs for the seasons ahead. When you get that trellis in place, give her some room to spread, she can put on quite a bit of cane once she settles in. Thanks for trusting us with your first online plant order, Natalie.

Very disappointed

I ordered and paid for 2 of these roses. The plants I received looked healthy. Sadly, when they started to bloom it was apparent that I did not get anything resembling what I ordered. One had both red and pink blossoms. The other had an entirely different red blossom. No response to my phone call or my email. I cannot use these roses. I will be reporting this company to the Better Business Bureau. I highly recommend you have nothing to do with this company.

So far so good

I got two of these Zephirine rose bushes about a month ago. They are doing super well - already blooming lovely roses and growing well. So happy!

A climbing rose that blooms within the first month is always a good sign, and Zephirine Drouhin tends to settle in fast when it's happy. As it matures you'll get even more of those deep pink, thornless canes, which makes training it along a fence or arbor genuinely enjoyable. Thanks for sharing the update, Hannah.

Just arrived!!

Rose arrived looking very healthy!

Healthy roots and strong canes right out of the box are a great sign for Zephirine Drouhin. This rose tends to establish quickly when it hits the ground in good shape, so you are off to a solid start. Thanks for sharing, Amanda!

Very happy!

Just opened the box and had to immediately write a review. I have never received a mail-order plant in the shape this rose bush came in! I was stunned. Absolutely gorgeous, healthy plant already laden with blossoms ready to open! Getting it in the soil very soon and hoping it will keep its excellent vigor.

Rebecca, a rose arriving with buds already forming is exactly what you want to see when you open that box. Zephirine Drouhin is a vigorous grower by nature, so give it a good deep watering once it is in the ground and it should settle in without missing a beat. Thanks for sharing that first impression with us.

Rose doing great!

My rose came well packaged and is thriving! Can’t wait for blooms!

Zephirine Drouhin is such a rewarding climber once it gets going, and it sounds like yours is off to a strong start. When blooms do arrive, you are in for a real treat. that soft, fragrant pink is hard to beat. Thanks for sharing the update!

Best rose ever

I was amazed at the size of this mail order rose! It arrived lush and healthy. It has to be at least three times the size of other, even more expensive roses I've ordered in the past. Additionally, it's an 'own root' rose. I don't do grafteds...very pleased with this nursery and will order again!

Zephirine Drouhin is such a rewarding rose to grow, and it sounds like yours arrived ready to hit the ground running. The own-root factor is a real point of pride for us since own-root roses tend to establish more reliably and come back true if they ever die back to the crown. Thanks for mentioning the size comparison, Susan. We think you will be very happy with how this one performs for years to come.

Love the rose climber

Love the rose climber. It's doing very well so far.
Can't wait to see it growing up the arbor and full of blooms. i need to be patient.

Patience definitely pays off with Zephirine Drouhin. Once she finds her footing and starts climbing, the blooms are hard to beat, and the thornless canes make training her up an arbor a real pleasure. Thanks for sharing the update, Dean. We hope she puts on a show for you this season.

Beautiful healthy plants in bloom

Beautiful healthy plants in bloom. Exceptional packing! Very with my roses.

Zephirine Drouhin arriving already in bloom is a real treat, and it sounds like yours made the trip in great shape. That rose is such a rewarding climber, nearly thornless and wonderfully fragrant as it matures. Thanks for the kind note, Cindi, and enjoy watching it settle in and take off.

Order not fully received

I ordered two rose bushes, only one was received. I have called customer service twice, they are helping other customers so the only option is to leave a message, which I did. Twice. I sent two emails to customer service over a three business day time time period. No response. I am frustrated. These are not cheap roses. This is my first time ordering from Nature Hill Nursery. I am very unhappy.

Wonderful gardening experience!

Delighted with this rose! It arrived in spectacular form, filled with buds that opened a few days later. I’ll be back for more of your superior plants.

Zephirine Drouhin is such a rewarding climber, and getting one that arrives full of buds ready to open is a great start. She is also one of the few climbing roses that does well in partial shade, so keep that in mind as she settles in. We look forward to seeing you shop with us again, Sarah.

Powdery mildew

The plant is a good size and generally healthy enough but it arrived with powdery mildew on it. We treated it and hopefully it will clear up.

Perfectly perfect!

My new rose arrived last week in PERFECT condition full of buds! It literally filled the big box. We planted it last week and cut a rose last Friday. It’s still beautiful in the vase. Can’t wait to see it grow! Totally satisfied/. Pat Lockerd

A climbing rose that ships full of buds and delivers a cut flower within the first week of planting, that is a great sign of things to come, Pat. Zephirine Drouhin is a real charmer once it gets established, and with that kind of start you are in for a good show. Thanks for sharing the update, and enjoy watching it climb.

Very pleased

I just got my rose plant today it was very beautiful am so happy I will ask my husband to order me another.

Zephirine Drouhin is one of those roses that makes a strong first impression, and it only gets better once it settles in and starts climbing. It's a thornless variety too, which makes it a joy to work with up close. We hope your husband places that second order soon, and that both plants give you years of blooms. Thanks for sharing the excitement, R!

Nice healthy rose

Arrived very healthy and good sized. Babied it in house and on deck during some cold weather but once planted, it has been quite happy.

Zephirine Drouhin is worth the extra care you gave it during that cold stretch. It sounds like it settled in well once it found its spot in the ground, and with any luck you will have those fragrant, thornless canes climbing happily for many seasons to come. Thanks for sharing the update, Ruth.

They adapted well and I had blossoms within 2-3

They adapted well and I had blossoms within 2-3 weeks!

Blossoms in 2 to 3 weeks is a great sign that the roots settled in quickly and the canes got right to work. Zephirine Drouhin tends to be an eager bloomer once it finds its footing, and it sounds like yours did exactly that. Thanks for sharing, Hannah!

Gorgeous first blooms!

Gorgeous first blooms!! Not much after that but I’m thinking it’s because we basically ignore it all summer except for watering it.. also because it is in afternoon sun inTx

Hi Sharon,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose! We're thrilled to hear about those gorgeous first blooms. To help encourage more blooms throughout summer, try feeding it monthly with a rose-specific fertilizer from spring through late summer. Also, deadheading spent blooms regularly will signal the plant to produce more flowers. We appreciate you choosing Nature Hills Nursery. Thank you - Nature Hills Customer Support

Frequently Asked Questions

How to prune zephirine drouhin climbing rose?

  • Prune Zephirine Drouhin in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, diseased, or weak canes first, then selectively prune older canes to encourage new growth. Since it's nearly thornless, pruning is safer than most roses. Train new canes horizontally for maximum blooms.

Are there rose bushes without thorns?

  • Truly thornless roses are rare, but the Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose is nearly thornless, making it safe to handle during pruning and training. This fragrant Bourbon rose thrives in zones 5-9 and blooms continuously from May to frost. Shop this hard-to-find variety at naturehills.com.

What USDA hardiness zones is the Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose suitable for?

  • The Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9. This broad range makes it suitable for most temperate regions across the United States. Plant in spring after your last frost date for best establishment.

How tall and wide does this climbing rose grow at maturity?

  • Zephirine Drouhin typically reaches 8-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide at maturity in zones 5-9. This vigorous climber grows quickly, so provide sturdy support like a trellis or fence from the start. Allow adequate spacing for air circulation around the mature plant.

What type of soil does the Zephirine Drouhin rose prefer?

  • Zephirine Drouhin roses thrive in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0. This adaptable climber tolerates various soil types but performs best with consistent moisture and good drainage. Amend heavy clay or sandy soils with compost before planting this thornless beauty available at naturehills.com.

How often should I water this climbing rose after planting?

  • Water newly planted Zephirine Drouhin roses deeply 2-3 times per week for the first month. Once established, this vigorous climber needs about 1 inch of water weekly. Check soil moisture 2 inches down and water when dry.

Is this climbing rose deer resistant?

  • Zephirine Drouhin roses are not considered deer resistant, as deer typically browse on rose foliage and buds. However, the nearly thornless canes make this variety particularly vulnerable compared to thorny roses. Plant in areas with existing deer deterrents or use protective fencing during establishment.

What plants pair well with the Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose?

  • Zephirine Drouhin pairs beautifully with clematis, lavender, and other cottage garden perennials that thrive in zones 5-9. Since it tolerates part-shade and blooms from May through frost, consider underplanting with hostas or astilbe in shadier spots. Plant companions that won't compete with its 4-inch fragrant blooms.
