Mosquito-Repelling Plants

The truth about mosquito-repelling plants: most lists are wrong. Citronella geraniums do not contain citronella. Citronella grass does not survive northern winters. The plants that actually repel mosquitoes are hardy perennials with peer-reviewed essential-oil chemistry, and they are the ones we grow.

Every plant in this collection contains a documented mosquito-repellent compound: nepetalactone in catmint (ten times more effective than DEET in Iowa State University lab studies), thymol in bee balm, methylchavicol in anise hyssop, linalool in lavender, camphor in Russian sage. These are not marketing claims. They are the compounds inside the leaves.

One critical fact most articles skip: the repellent oils are locked inside the leaf until the plant is crushed or brushed. Plant these around seating areas, along paths, and at the corners of your patio so they are activated as you walk past.

For the full guide on which plant works best for your situation, read our honest guide to mosquito-repelling plants.

What to expect from each plant in this collection:

  • Catmint (Nepeta): The science star. Strongest peer-reviewed evidence. Long-blooming, deer resistant, pollinator magnet. Zones 3 to 8.
  • Bee Balm (Monarda): Thymol-rich foliage. Bonus hummingbird and butterfly magnet. Zones 4 to 9.
  • Anise Hyssop (Agastache): Long bloom, edible flowers, deer resistant. Zones 4 to 8.
  • Lavender (Lavandula): The crowd-pleaser. Linalool in every leaf. Pick a hardy cultivar like Phenomenal for Zone 5 winters. Zones 5 to 9.
  • Russian Sage (Salvia / Perovskia): Drought hero, deer resistant, silver-blue all summer. Zones 4 to 9.
  • Creeping Thyme (Thymus): Walkable groundcover that releases thyme oil as you step on it. Zones 4 to 9.
  • Chocolate Mint (Mentha x piperita): Bonus pick. Real menthol-based repellency, and the only edible cocktail-garden plant on the list. Zones 3 to 9.

All plants are container-grown and ready to plant the day they arrive. Every order is backed by the Nature Hills Growing Guarantee.
