Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant

Growing Zones 2-7
The Minuet Lilac (Syringa 'Minuet') is a hardy shrub with outstanding spring flowers that are highly fragrant. It would look spectacular in your yard planted as a hedge at the side of your house or as a focal point in your landscape. The Minuet is an especially prolific Lilac, so plan on snipping a few handfuls of the rich lavender panicles to fill your house with the Lilac scent of spring each year. You'll love the gradient effect of dark to light lavender from base to tip of each panicled bloom!
Plant them in rows near your house to enjoy the sweet scent of lilac wafting along on the evening breeze. There's nothing quite as breathtaking as the sight of this rounded shrub overflowing with a profusion of soft, warm purple flowers. The honeybees and butterflies, and occasional hummingbirds that pay you a visit will only add to the effect! In the fall, the forest green foliage will turn a light yellow, adding further color to your autumn landscape.
Extremely cold-hardy down to USDA growing zones 2 through 7, Minuet is very adaptable and hardy, blooming and growing reliably regardless of the chill. Staying a modest 6-8 feet in height and spreading to about 4-6 feet wide, Minuet is a fantastic specimen for even the smallest properties!
Planting and Application:
Create fragrant drifts en masse of showy spring color, rows or informal hedges and barriers along your property edges for gorgeous privacy and definition that both you and your neighbors will love! Pollinators will be buzzing around these blooms and this strong fragrance is as welcome to the pollinator garden as it is in cut flower gardens! Perennial beds are dressed up by the backdrop of beautiful green leaves, and cottage gardens benefit from this classic beauty.
Sized perfectly for foundation plantings, your view out of your windows will not be blocked, and these are wonderful in large planters around the patio! Add fragrance near seating and meditation gardens and sunny back decks. Add to protected planters around a terrace, lovely containers by your front door to welcome you home, or as tidy accents throughout any garden bed or border!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
It's easy to care for and hardy in most soils and conditions. It's even tolerant of polluted urban settings. Lilacs bloom best in full sun and are easily grown in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. Provide moderate moisture consistently all growing season and mulch helps your plants stay cool and moist. Apply to a depth of three inches, then pull it away six inches from the stems. Air circulation is important for Lilacs, so find a breezy place for them to perform at their best. Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.
Disease and deer-resistant so you'll be saved the time and trouble of dealing with costly measures to keep it safe from harm. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on planting day. Deer are hungry and curious, and you want to train them to leave your plants alone. Reapply according to the label.
The Minuet actually prefers to be left alone, so a lack of pruning will allow for even more blooms. If you do need to give your shrub a trim, follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering:
Prune right after the flowers are done, as Lilacs will produce next year's flowers on the new growth from this year. Snip the past flowers, then remove inward-heading branches and the thickest stems out at ground level. The goal is to let the interior of the shrub have plenty of sunlight and air circulation. Remember less is more for the Minuet Lilac!
Once your Lilac plants have been growing for about 10 years, you'll want to start a regular schedule of renewal pruning, and removal of suckers (when needed). After the blooms are fading, cut a few of the oldest, thickest branches right down to the ground each year. The younger, thinner branches remain and keep your plant vigorous and healthy.
Renewal pruning is great for your Lilac shrub. Removing the oldest growth lets the new branches take their turn. The youngest branches will produce the best bloom for you the following spring. Prune to keep an open interior to reduce the chances of powdery mildew.
